Nintendo has long been rumoured to be working on an N64 Classic Mini to follow on from the success of the SNES and NES Mini.
For two years in a row Nintendo have released classic consoles, going chronologically through their home systems.
The first classic console was the NES Classic Mini, a pint-sized version of their breakthrough Nintendo Entertainment System.
Then Nintendo followed up this miniature 8-Bit console by doing a classic version of their next home system, the SNES.
It was widely expected that Nintendo would follow this up by releasing a mini version of their third home console – the Nintendo 64 (aka N64).

But so far there’s been no official word on a N64 Mini, despite plenty of rumours and even alleged images of the micro console leaking.
And comments from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime may indicate that the N64 Classic Mini is not going to happen.
Speaking to THR, Reggie said that “the current systems are the extent of our classic programme”.
He also said that the way Nintendo fans continue to enjoy “classic content is going to be through Nintendo Switch Online”.
This hopefully raises the prospect of SNES, N64, Gamecube and maybe even Wii games featuring on the Nintendo Switch at some point.
Reggie said: “There’s no ability for add-on content with our classic consoles, so when you purchase the console it’s coming with that set roster of content.
“We worked very hard, both for the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, to really have the best games that defined that generation.
“We’ve said that the current systems are the extent of our classic programme.
“We’ve also been clear that, at least from an Americas perspective, these products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone.
“And that’s it.
“The way that consumers will be able to continue participating with our classic content is going to be through Nintendo Switch Online, and we just released three new games from the NES generation onto that platform.
“We look at that as the main way that consumers will be able to experience that legacy content.”
The news comes as more games have been added to Nintendo Switch Online this week.
Subscribers can get to play with some brand new NES games this week – Adventures of Lolo, the hard-as-nails Ninja Gaiden and Wario’s Woods.
Special additions of Dr Mario and Metroid – which gives players boosted powers – has also been added to Switch Online.
