MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 TOTTENHAM

Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at Old Trafford

30:  Jose fooled everyone with his formation. It’s Herrera not Matic in a back three. And Pogba’s switched to right side of midfield. Bright start by United with Fred going close in first minute.

Lukaku wastes good chance to improve his poor scoring record against Spurs. If the shot had been on his favoured left foot that would have been a goal. He mussed an early chance at Brighton that would have changed the whole dynamic of that game. Fine margins.

Having said that, he then miscues with his left boot after Shaw sets him up. No prisoners being taken – Herrera’s been booked for a crunching tackle on Moura.

Now Kane’s in the book – but it’s not a red card. His boot was on the floor as he went in on Valencia.

28: Dele Alli should score, or at least provide the assist. Nemanja Matic dithers in possession and is quickly robbed near his penalty area. Dele waltzes into the penalty area but decides to to square it to the unmarked Harry Kane and Chris Smalling makes the tackle. Should have scored.

25: Unexpectedly feisty this. Harry Kane catches Valencia, who is caught but his theatrics are a bit much. The result is that Harry Kane joins Lucas Moura and Ander Herrera in the book.

22: Antonio Valencia back with a… slice. The full-back drives forward but doesn’t see any options and decides to smack it high and wide.

19: Tottenham on the ropes! Luke Shaw plays a fine ball over the top to Jesse Lingard, who slips it over to Romelu Lukaku to fire at a comfortable height for Lloris.

Ander Herrera booked for a cynical slide tackle on Moura. Really needless and quite ugly from the Spanish midfielder.

16: Oh. My. Word. How on earth has Romelu Lukaku missed that? Danny Rose’s backpass falls horribly short allowing Lukaku to intercept. He rounds Hugo Lloris then somehow steers it wide of the far post. Tight angle but a glorious chance.

Jose Mourinho shrugs in frustration. You can’t legislate for a miss like that.

13: It’s been like a game of chess this. Both sides are trying to work the other’s tactical tweaks. Lingard alongside Lukaku, Herrera in defence and Alli drifting in and out. #Tactics

10: Crunch! Referee Craig Pawson has a big decision to make here. Lucas Moura goes in on Phil Jones with a high boot that leaves the defender on the deck. It’s quite similar to Sadio Mane’s on Ederson last year. Just a yellow.

8: Hugo Lloris looks nervy. Lingard puts him under a bit of pressure and the Frenchman hurriedly swipes it straight to Matic, who can’t control.

Nice quick start to this match. High tempo and plenty of attacking intent.

5: Does anyone know where Ander Herrera is playing tonight? It’s almost like he’s playing on the right side of the back three. It looks like Fred is the most advanced of the Manchester United midfielders.

2: Nearly the perfect start for the hosts. Fred squeezes his way past Vertonghen before poking the ball wide of the right-hand post. That still wouldn’t have been quicker than Christian Eriksen’s last season at Wembley.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 TOTTENHAM

1: And we’re off! Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho share a warm embrace on the touchline. Not sure Poch’s black shirt, tie and trousers are the ticket tonight.

TWO-MINUTE WARNING

19:58: I’ll now be accepting your predictions, folks. The players have emerged from the tunnel and Sky cameras focus on a banner saying ‘MUFC, my religion.”

I’ll go for a sneaky 1-0 win for Manchester United tonight, but I reserve the right to delete this post if I’m wrong…

INJURY

19:54: Late drama at Old Trafford. Erik Lamela has been injured in the warm-up, so Luke Amos takes his place on the Tottenham bench.

ANOTHER HOODOO?

19:50: Most people go through life without ever having themselves a hoodoo, but Harry Kane has already notched up two!

Fresh from getting rid of the August hoodoo, Kane will want to sort another ‘curse’ out. 109 Premier League goals but he’s never scored at Old Trafford.

UNWANTED RUN

19:45: For Tottenham – who beat Fulham at Wembley having opened their season with a 2-1 win at Newcastle – avoiding defeat or even just scoring a goal will see them break new ground under boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Since the Argentinian took charge at the club in 2014, their four away games against United have ended in one 3-0 and three 1-0 defeats. They had won on each of their previous two visits to Old Trafford.

I EXPECTED MORE – NEVILLE

19:40: Gary Neville says the start of the season for his former side has not gone how he expected.

Neville says he expected United to build on the second-half of last season, where they ended up finishing second behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

“I think that’s the main thing (the performance),” Neville said on Sky Sports. “When you look back at sort of the last part of last season, it was obvious from Christmas onwards that City were going to win the league.

“But what you thought was when Sanchez came in he struggled, but you thought there’s three or four months here for Manchester United to play their way into form to challenge this season.

“It hasn’t gone as expected, the stuttering start in terms of obviously bringing players back, all the teams have had to cope with that. So it hasn’t been the fluid start that Jose Mourinho would have wanted.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Michael: I’m not a Manchester United fan but live close enough to be in range of Jose’s toys if it goes wrong. Jose has lost the plot here. MUFC appointed a name not a plan they got what they deserve with Jose. The spends and dumping of players is ridiculous. He isn’t developing players.

Mark: Interesting fact. In two games Mo Salah and Sergio Aguero have both made twice as many successful tackles than Paul Pogba.

Mike: You wouldn’t have guessed Manchester United were the home team tonight with those two line-ups. Fred, Matic and Herrera – Where’s the attacking intent?

FRUSTRATION FOR JOSE

19:30: Jose Mourinho has hinted at unhappiness with his squad’s composition and fitness levels.

The defeat to Brighton saw odds on Mourinho leaving tumble as United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and key midfielder Paul Pogba came under scrutiny.

It led to an uncomfortable week which continued during a tetchy press conference. The manager was brusque throughout and, perhaps tellingly, rejected the chance to back his squad.

Asked if he was content with the United squad is and where they are in terms of fitness, Mourinho retorted: “You know my answer.”

WHY THE CHANGES?

19:25: Six changes is pretty dramatic from Jose Mourinho, but having watched that Brighton defeat I can understand why. 3-2 was quite a flattering scoreline on reflection.

Anyway, here’s what Jose said about his changes.

“We didn’t play well, we made mistakes, we change the team. The match before we played well, no mistakes, total control, deserved victory, we didn’t change the team. If I don’t play Valencia, Matic, Lingard when they are ready, I don’t think you’d accept it, you’d ask why I didn’t play important players if they were ready,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

TEAM NEWS

19:20: Hugo Lloris captained Tottenham days after being charged with drink driving.

The France captain apologised “wholeheartedly” for his actions on Friday and started at Old Trafford, where Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose came into the side.

Nemanja Matic was one of six United alterations, with MUTV confirming the defensive midfielder would form part of a back three.

CRAZY…

19:17: No London team has won a league game at Old Trafford since Spurs’ 2-1 victory there in January 2014 (P22 W0 D7 L15 since).

JOSE WIELDS THE AXE

Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at Old Trafford

19:15:  As expected Mourinho has wielded the axe in dramatic fashion after the defeat at Brighton – he’s made six changes to his starting line-up.

In come Nemanja Matic, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard all for their first starts of the season.

Out go Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Ashley Young, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Andreas Periera.

Significantly, Alexis Sanchez is left on the bench after missing the Brighton game through illness while Martial does even make it as a sub. That will intensify speculation the French youngster could be heading out of the club.

Mourinho has changed his formation as well with Matic likely to line-up in a back three, flanked by Jones and Smalling with Valencia and Luke Shaw as wing-backs.

Hugo Lloris keeps his place in goal for Spurs despite his drink driving charge last week.

Calvin: I am not a Manchester United fan but just looking at their bench and wow! Alexis Sanchez aside it’s one of the weakest I can ever recall seeing. Thoughts from anyone else?

Ziggy: Manchester United line-up looks very impressive and exciting. Marcus Rashford on the bench for some late pace. Could be a big night for United.

Daniel: Should be an easy game for Spurs tonight as Hugo Lloris has already secured the points…

Very clever Daniel. Not the weakest I’ve seen, Calvin. And Ziggy? You’re on another planet!

‘EXPECT 11 PLAYERS’

19:05: Jose Mourinho is keeping his formation cards close to his chest. Geoff Shreeves asked the Portuguese tactician to explain his selection, and here’s what he said…

“You can expect 11 players, I hope to see 11 players fighting hard with the great organisation we trained for during the week, without the ball when trying to stop a fantastic opponent,” he said. “But I also expect a team of 11, including the goalkeeper, to work hard for that, to be involved in the attacking dynamic when we have the ball.”

Thanks, Jose…

WILL HUGO PLAY?

18:55: So there are doubts over whether Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will be involved, after it emerged on Friday that the France international, who won the World Cup alongside Pogba over the summer, had been charged with drink driving and will appear in court next month.

Lloris, who has apologised “wholeheartedly”, missed training that day and was set to be subject to internal procedures, which could see him dropped or even stripped of the club captaincy.

We’re about to find out what Mauricio Pochettino has done. Standby for the team news and line-ups.

PINK IS BACK

18:50: Manchester United will wear a pink shirt for the first time this season in homage to the city’s newspaper past.

The matchday programme for tonight’s Premier League clash against Tottenham included a wrap-around with the headline of ‘The Pink is back!’

The Adidas kit will be launched tomorrow and is inspired by The Football Pink newspaper, which was created by the Manchester Evening News and went out on Saturday afternoons until its closure in 2007.

“Its legacy endures and this season The Pink rides again,” said the front page of United Review. “Not just in the hearts and minds of the fans, but on the backs of their heroes too.”

Iffy: Which Paul Pogba will show up tonight? The guy who wants to stay at Old Trafford or the person that wants to leave for Barcelona…

Michael: Sensing a good performance and big win from Manchester United. Let’s hope my instincts are right… for a change!

Lee: Honestly considering not watching the game tonight… Jose Mourinho brand football and management is slowly suffocating my love of the game.

Cheer up, Lee. It’s still over an hour away!

HOODOO OVER!

18:40: Spurs striker Harry Kane, who goes into the match having scored 30 goals in the top flight last term, six for England at the World Cup and, in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Fulham, his first one of this season – which was also his first ever August league goal.

He will be looking to build on that and make the difference at Old Trafford, as will United and Belgium counterpart Romelu Lukaku after he also registered his first goal of 2018-19 last weekend.

HAPPY CAMPERS?

18:35: Not quite. There has been plenty of talk in the build-up to this game about there being unrest at Manchester United.

Much has been spoken about boss Jose Mourinho’s relationship with Paul Pogba, and the manager, who has made clear his frustration about how the club fared in the transfer window over the summer, on Friday denied there was any rift with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Beaten 3-2 at Brighton last weekend, the Red Devils appear in need of a considerable boost, and this home game against a major rival could provide it – or have the opposite effect, should Mourinho’s side struggle.
