Eidos-Montréal Announces Staff Reductions

Montreal-based game developer Eidos-Montréal, the studio behind popular titles like Guardians of the Galaxy and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, has publicly announced a workforce reduction, impacting up to 75 employees. The studio cited the completion of a project mandate as the primary reason for the layoffs, indicating a lack of immediate roles for the affected personnel.

Studio Cites Project Completion for Layoffs

In a statement released on social media, Eidos-Montréal confirmed the job cuts. The message conveyed that “up to 75 valuable members” of their team would be departing as one of their “mandates is coming to an end.” The company emphasized that these layoffs were not a reflection of the employees’ performance or talent.

The official statement elaborated, “It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.”

Supporting Departing Employees

Eidos-Montréal acknowledged the impact of this decision on its staff. “These very talented, highly experienced experts are going to enter the employment market, and we are working to support them through this transition,” the company stated. The studio indicated intentions to assist affected employees in their job search.

Fable, slated for release in 2026.

Future Projects Remain a Focus

Despite the staff reductions, Eidos-Montréal affirmed its dedication to its ongoing game development projects. The studio asserted that “Eidos-Montréal stays committed to deliver its other projects currently in development.” Currently, the most prominent publicly known project involving the developer is Fable, for which Eidos-Montréal is providing support to Playground Games, the primary development team. However, it remains uncertain if Fable is the project nearing completion or if Eidos-Montréal will continue its involvement.

Gaming Industry Job Market Trends

The broader gaming industry has witnessed a significant number of job losses in recent years. Numerous layoffs have impacted thousands of professionals within the sector. This trend highlights the volatile nature of game development employment.

Recent industry news reflects these shifts, with stories ranging from substantial layoffs at major studios to discussions around the formation of industry-wide unions. These developments suggest a period of significant change and adaptation within the video game job market.

Solidarity with Affected Staff

Our thoughts are with all those impacted by these recent layoffs at Eidos-Montréal, as well as with the employees who remain at the studio during this challenging period.
