All Creatures Great and Small’s James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) and Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton) have already faced horror in their pregnancy after she was exposed to brucellosis.
Determined to teach newcomer Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose) to stop reading the books and get involved, he joined Nicholas on a call out.
During the examination of the ill calf, James and Carmody realised it had been infected with brucellosis, a disease which affects calves.
Sadly, the calf they saw too died, and left Helen to accompany James to the farm to help with any more calves, exposing her to the brucellosis.
On their return to the Darrowby, they bumped into Carmody who began speaking about a study he had read up on with the similarities in the calf deaths and human baby deaths.
Panicking, Helen walked inside to scrub her arms down after being exposed to the disease, whilst James lost his temper with Carmody.
Reading what he was on about, he flipped and exclaimed: “You should have been there today, I couldn’t risk making things worse!”
Carmody remarked back that he hadn’t been invited and left Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) and Siegfried Farnon (Sam West) to see what all the commotion was about.
Walking out, Helen admitted: “I invited myself to help James today only it turns out I shouldn’t have.”
Carmody noted: “This study shows a link to brucellosis in cattle and unborn children,” before Siegfried asked: “This has relevance because?”
“Because I am expecting,” she bluntly noted. Sitting at the table for breakfast, Carmody tried to apologise but James snapped back: “No test, no cure, no nothing.”
Putting their brains together, the team managed to come up with a way to test Helen in a similar way they do to cows.
Collecting the results, Helen, James and the rest of Skeldale House were pleased to hear that the test results came back negative.
However, can the test results be reliable enough to give them a definitive answer? Will they have their happy ever after or is there still time for it to come crashing down?
