Space Forge Establishes US Semiconductor Venture to Boost Domestic Chip Production

TAMPA, Fla. — Space Forge, a UK-based in-orbit manufacturing company, has appointed seasoned technology professional Atul Kumar to spearhead a new semiconductor business in the United States. This strategic move aims to strengthen domestic chip production capabilities as national efforts to lessen dependence on foreign suppliers gain momentum. The initiative underscores the growing focus on bolstering the US semiconductor industry through innovative approaches like space manufacturing.

Veteran Technology Expert to Lead Semiconductor Operations

Kumar, a distinguished materials scientist possessing over two decades of experience in the technology sector, will be responsible for establishing manufacturing operations under Space Forge’s American subsidiary. According to an announcement made on April 10, his primary objective is to facilitate the expansion of semiconductor substrates both terrestrially and in space.

US Push for Semiconductor Independence

This development unfolds as the United States intensifies its initiatives to diminish reliance on foreign-made chips. This drive is fueled by concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities, national security imperatives, and escalating international trade tensions, particularly with China.

CHIPS Act Investment

The CHIPS and Science Act, enacted in 2022, is channeling billions of dollars into revitalizing advanced semiconductor production within the US and fostering domestic innovation in the crucial sector.

Harnessing Space for Advanced Material Production

“Our overarching objective is to introduce in-space manufacturing of cutting-edge semiconductor materials,” Kumar stated. “Concurrently, we plan to establish a land-based capability and post-processing capacity within the U.S. This infrastructure will ensure the provision of exceptionally high-grade semiconductor substrates.”

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

By leveraging the unique conditions of space, including microgravity, vacuum, and extreme temperature variations, Space Forge intends to produce materials exhibiting enhanced crystal quality. This innovative approach holds the potential to revolutionize material science and manufacturing.

Applications in Emerging Technologies

Kumar elaborated on the potential impact, stating, “This advancement could pave the way for an entirely new category of emerging applications across various fields, such as radio frequency, power management, photonics, and potentially even quantum computing. We envision our role as a material supplier, enabling applications that were previously deemed exceptionally challenging or even unattainable through terrestrial methods.”

ForgeStar Mission Series and Technology Testing

Space Forge is set to demonstrate its in-space manufacturing capabilities later this year with the ForgeStar-1 mission. This spacecraft is also designed to assess reentry technologies. While this initial mission is intended to harmlessly burn up in the atmosphere, future missions may focus on returning cargo.

Past Mission and Forward Momentum

The company’s inaugural spacecraft, ForgeStar-0, was unfortunately lost due to the Virgin Orbit launch failure from the UK in January 2023. A subsequent mission, initially planned for later that year, faced postponement for undisclosed reasons. Despite this setback, Space Forge is actively progressing with its technology development and mission plans.

Parabolic Flight Tests

Michelle Flemming, leading Space Forge’s U.S. expansion, announced plans for two parabolic flights this year, commencing in May. These flights will utilize aircraft to simulate microgravity conditions, providing a platform to rigorously test their technology.

Sub-Orbital Production as a Near-Term Goal

Kumar indicated that the venture anticipates launching a product line developed under sub-orbital conditions within the next few years. He acknowledged, “While it may not fully capitalize on the advantages of low Earth orbit manufacturing, we perceive it as a vital stepping stone towards our ultimate goals in space manufacturing.”

Broader Vision for Space-Based Manufacturing

In 2021, Space Forge secured $10.2 million in funding to advance its in-space manufacturing enterprise. Beyond semiconductors, the company’s ambitions extend to producing high-performance alloys, ultra-pure optical fibers, and advanced coatings for the next wave of technological innovations. Space Forge is positioning itself as a leader in the burgeoning field of space manufacturing, with a broad portfolio of advanced materials on the horizon.
