Trump Administration Sets Deadline for Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal Progress
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Friday that President Donald Trump is prepared to abandon attempts to negotiate a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within a matter of days, should tangible progress not materialize imminently.
Speaking in Paris after discussions with European and Ukrainian officials, Rubio emphasized the urgency of the situation. “We’re not going to continue with this initiative for weeks and months,” he asserted. “We need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is achievable in the next few weeks.”
He added, “The president feels very strongly about that. He has dedicated a lot of time and energy to this… this is important, but there are a lot of other really important things going on that deserve just as much, if not more, attention.”
US-Ukraine Discussions Show Signs of Progress, Minerals Pact Eyed
Rubio’s remarks follow indications of advancement in U.S. dialogues with Ukraine. President Trump indicated on Thursday his expectation to finalize an accord with Kyiv the following week, granting the U.S. access to Ukrainian mineral resources.
Previous Minerals Pact Attempt
A prior effort to secure a minerals pact in February collapsed after a reported disagreement between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump, along with Vice President JD Vance, at the Oval Office.
Positive Reception in Paris for US Peace Framework
Following Thursday’s Paris talks – the first substantial, high-level, in-person discussions on Trump’s peace efforts involving European powers – Rubio conveyed that the U.S. peace framework received an “encouraging reception.” Zelensky’s office described the talks as “constructive and positive.”
White House Impatience Amid Geopolitical Challenges
Rubio’s Friday statements underscore growing impatience within the White House regarding the sluggish advancement in resolving a mounting list of global geopolitical challenges. He noted that he communicated with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after the Paris talks, informing him of their constructive nature and outlining “some of the elements” of the U.S. peace framework.
Security Guarantees and Broader Obstacles
Rubio mentioned that the topic of U.S. security guarantees as part of any potential agreement was raised during the Paris discussions, without elaborating on specifics. He suggested **security guarantees** were an issue “we can fix in sort of in a way that’s acceptable to everyone,” yet emphasized, “we have bigger challenges that we need to figure out, whether it’s even possible within the short term.”
Urgency for Tangible Signs of Progress
He clarified that while securing a peace deal would undoubtedly be challenging, indications of imminent progress were necessary. “There’s no one saying this can be done in 12 hours. But we want to see how far apart it is and whether those differences can even be narrowed, if it’s even possible to get movement within the period of time we have in mind,” he explained.
