US Vice President’s Wife to Visit Greenland Amidst Annexation Speculation
Usha Vance, spouse of US Vice President JD Vance, is scheduled to travel to Greenland this week. This visit occurs as former President Donald Trump reiterates the notion of American annexation of the strategically important, semi-autonomous Danish territory.
Vance’s Itinerary and Delegation
Mrs. Vance will arrive in Greenland on Thursday as part of a US delegation. According to a White House statement, the delegation’s agenda includes touring historical landmarks, gaining insights into Greenlandic heritage, and attending the national dogsled competition.
The delegation is expected to return to the United States on March 29th. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright will also be part of the delegation visiting Greenland. A US official mentioned that the group will also tour a US military installation located in Greenland.
Trump’s Annexation Stance and Greenlandic Reaction
Since assuming office for a second term on January 20th, Donald Trump has publicly advocated for US annexation of Greenland, stating it will become part of the US “one way or another.”
Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede, in remarks to the newspaper Sermitsiaq on Sunday, described Advisor Waltz’s visit as a “provocation.”

“The sole intent is to project a show of force towards us, and the message is unambiguous,” stated Prime Minister Egede. “He is Trump’s trusted and closest advisor, and his presence in Greenland alone will undoubtedly reinforce the belief in Trump’s mission among Americans, and consequently, pressure will intensify following this visit.”
Strategic Importance of Greenland
Greenland’s geographical position and abundant mineral resources are considered advantageous to the United States. Its location along the shortest route between Europe and North America is critical for the US ballistic missile early warning system.
Opposition to Annexation
Both the governments of Greenland and Denmark have voiced their opposition to any annexation by the US.
The Greenlandic government, currently in a caretaker capacity following the March 11th general election, where a party favoring a gradual path to independence from Denmark secured victory, has not issued any comments regarding the visit.
Danish Government’s Position
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in a written statement responding to news of the visit, affirmed that “this is a matter we are treating seriously.” She emphasized Denmark’s desire for cooperation with the US, but stressed that such cooperation must be based on “fundamental principles of sovereignty.”
Prime Minister Frederiksen further added that any dialogue with the US concerning Greenland will be conducted in close collaboration with both the Danish government and the incoming Greenlandic administration.
