Wynne Evans has broken his social media silence just weeks after he stepped down from the Strictly Live! Tour. The 53-year-old opera singer – best known for appearing in the GoCompare adverts – competed on the BBC Latin and ballroom show with Katya Jones last year and had been starring in the nationwide tour before his exit.
He quit the live show after it emerged that he had made a comment that was deemed sexually inappropriate during a photo call. It was later revealed that Wynne had used the sexually suggestive term “spit roast” to describe host Janette Manrara during a private joke with EastEnders actor and former co-star Jamie Borthwick.
Wynne has now taken to Instagram to share photos on his Instagram page, with one of his dogs, Ginny, and another of his garden at night. It comes after he decided to “take time off” from his show on BBC Radio Wales following the crude comment. He said: “I’ve agreed with the BBC that I’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing.”
Regarding the incident where Evans was caught on camera uttering “spit-roast” during a Strictly photo opportunity, the friend explained: “Jamie Borthwick is his mate, and he was laughing and joking, and Katya plays along with the joke too. It’s just schoolboy comedy. He is more Jim Davidson than Peter Kay, and if anything, is more guilty of having a terrible sense of humor. ” reports the Mirror.
Following his exit, Wynne was reportedly in turmoil over fears for his career and close sources revealed that Evans was “worried he could lose everything”. The BBC faced calls to cancel his travel show, Wynne and Joanna: All At Sea, co-starring Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page.

A friend commented on the situation: “At the end of the day, he has been a bit of an oaf and made a stupid mistake, but does he deserve such hatred? Yes, using the term spit-roast was absolutely wrong, and he realises this. His problem is that he is a joker and he continually wants to play to the crowd.”
Initially, BBC bosses had let Evans off with a warning, but eventually gave in to growing anger by dropping him from the live dates. The Welsh Opera singer apologised again for his actions, saying: “I’ve agreed with the BBC that I’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing.”
“I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. Apologies to those I won’t get to see at the remaining performances and I’m grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.”
Last year, during his stint on Strictly with Katya Jones, eagle-eyed viewers noticed her halting his wandering hand. They brushed it off as “just messing around” with a “very silly inside joke.”
