Colorado named assistant coach Darrin Chiaverini as its interim football coach. He’ll take over for Mel Tucker, who officially was named head coach at Michigan State on Wednesday.
Chiaverini, 42, was the Buffaloes’ wide receivers coach the past four seasons, and in 2019, doubled as assistant head coach. He was a wide receiver at Colorado from 1995-98.
“I have a lot of confidence in Darrin to lead us through this interim period,” Colorado athletic director Rick George said in a statement. “He has been associated with the program beginning with his playing days 25 years ago and cares deeply about the Buffs.”
Known as a prolific recruiter – he was named one of the top recruiters in the nation by Rivals.com for the past three recruiting classes – Chiaverini sent a message to the players via Twitter on Wednesday, writing, “Came to Boulder Colorado when I was 17 years old!! There is not a better University in the country than the University of Colorado!! We are building something Buff Nation will be proud of!! To our 2020 class and our current players stand Shoulder to Shoulder and know we’re Rising.”

He was arrested Sunday after driving 75 mph in a 35-mph zone and following other vehicles too closely, according to Utah County court documents obtained by KSLSports.com. A search of the vehicle discovered two alcohol containers, one empty, and a THC vape pen, per the report. A field sobriety test was performed at Utah County Jail, where he was charged with suspicion of DUI, reckless driving, unsafe lane travel, speeding and possession of an open container of alcohol.
BYU issued a statement acknowledging it is “aware of the situation and looking into it.”
—Two former Ohio State football players accused of rape appeared in court for the first time in Columbus. Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Cynthia Ebner set bond at $100,000 for Amir Riep and $75,000 for Jahsen Wint, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
The judge also ordered both men to have no contact with the alleged 19-year-old victim or with each other, and to make no comments on social media regarding the case.
Riep and Wint, both 21, were arrested Tuesday on charges of rape and kidnapping. On Wednesday, Ohio State coach Ryan Day dismissed both defensive backs, who each had one year of eligibility remaining, from the team.
