Liverpool news: Napoli star warns Reds over Champions League aims

That’s the view of Napoli captain Marek Hamsik, who helped his side beat the Reds last week.

It was Liverpool’s first defeat in Europe this season, with Lorenzo Insigne’s 90th-minute strike proving the difference.

It came after Jurgen Klopp’s men had beat Paris Saint-Germain in the first match-week while Napoli drew with Red Star Belgrade.

It means Napoli top Group C on four points with PSG and Liverpool both on three after two matches.

Liverpool struggled in Naples despite possessing a strong attacking threat consisting of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

And Hamsik believes Napoli have as much chance as Liverpool and PSG of progressing past the group stage.

“They [Liverpool] have an incredible attacking force, but despite that, we didn’t concede one single shot on goal,” Hamsik said.

“It was a great performance from us, unfortunately, we didn’t win in Belgrade and the two points we lost could cost us in the future.

“We’ll take on PSG next, they’re just as strong as Liverpool, with the same attacking potential.

“However, there are other games we have to focus on before the game in Naples.”

Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman though has tipped the Reds to still progress in the Champions League.

“I thought it was a poor performance and they have to get better,” McManaman said on BT Sport.

“Liverpool should qualify and quite comfortably.

“I expect them to beat Napoli at Anfield, so when I look into the future, I don’t see any real problems for Liverpool.

“Liverpool gave the ball away a lot, more than I have ever seen them.

“They didn’t make any chances, they looked a little disjointed at times, but I know by playing in tough European games how this result will feel.

“I don’t think it should matter in the grand scheme of things of qualifying for the next stage of the competition.”
