OnePlus update – Major news revealed ahead of OnePlus 6 release date

OnePlus have a number of big changes lined up as the Chinese smartphone start-up gets ready for the OnePlus 6 release.

OnePlus have already confirmed that they plan to change the production timeline for its cases and screen protectors.

OnePlus fans will now be able to get these accessories for smartphone models up to a year after they have been discontinued.

This should help OnePlus owners get extra life out of the popular range of Android smartphone.

And now it’s been reported that OnePlus are planning another shake-up to its business.

The Chinese smartphone start-up is allegedly looking to establish its manufacturing in India.

ET claimed that OnePlus are in talks with domestic equipment manufacturers to source components for upcoming devices.

The move is expected to reduce import costs and duties with could lead to OnePlus phones getting cheaper in the future, TechRadar claimed.

OnePlus have previously explored making phones in India, with the plan first announced back in 2015.

The news comes after the Indian government raised the duty on imported smartphones to 20 per cent.

The policy means duties and taxation is in favour of local producers.

And with India such a key market for OnePlus, the manufacturing shake-up could ensure OnePlus reduces cost and stays competitive in the region.

The news comes as OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed the Chinese smartphone start-up will launch its next flagship smartphone before June 30.

Presumably named OnePlus 6, the all-new smartphone will be unveiled late in Q2 2018, OnePlus’s Lau revealed.

The Chinese smartphone start-up’s second financial quarter runs from April 1 to June 30.

If the company is targeting the end of that quarter, we can expect the OnePlus 6 to launch in a similar timeframe to the OnePlus 5 last year.

That Android smartphone launched on June 20 2017 in the UK.

Elsewhere, OnePlus CEO Lau also confirmed the processor that will power the next-generation handset.

Like the much-rumoured Samsung Galaxy S9, the OnePlus 6 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.

“Of course, there’s no other choice,” Lau told CNET during the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The OnePlus 6 could also represent a real watershed moment for the Chinese company.

OnePlus wants to nail down distribution deals with the major US carriers, enabling customers to buy the smartphone in-store on monthly contracts.

In the UK, OnePlus uses O2 as its exclusive mobile carrier.

“If the right opportunity and right timing come along, we’ll be very happy to experiment,” Lau added.
