Evil Within 2: A horror fan’s guide to Bethesda’s terrifying new PS4, Xbox One release

The Evil Within 2’s Friday, October 13 release date is just few days away on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Picking up where the original left off, players step into the shoes of Sebastian Castellanos, as he explores another twisted STEM world of hideous creatures, grotesque monsters and murderous psychopaths.

But who exactly comes up with stuff and where do they get their ideas? Express Online spoke to game director John Johanas and Tango Gameworks boss Shinji Mikami about the horror influences that can be found within.

Having directed the very first Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4 and the original Evil Within, it’s fair to say that Tango Gameworks founder Shinji Mikami knows a thing or two about horror.

Mikami’s favourite horror movies include the Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and it doesn’t take long for the latter to rear its terrifying head.

“In the beginning of the game, there’s a scene that’s very reminiscent of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre when they are eating at the table,” Miakmi revealed.

And considering chainsaw-wielding baddies have been a staple of Shinji Mikami horror games since Resident Evil 4 – and don’t forget that barn battle in the original Evil Within – there’s a good chance the dinner scene isn’t the only reference to the classic horror film.

Mikami also professes his love for a Japanese novel called Base of Evil, which is part of a series of novels involving grizzly serial killings committed with an artistic edge.

Perhaps this is what inspired Evil Within 2 villain Stefano Valentini, an artist whose photographic exhibitions capture his victims’ exact moment of death.

In fact, the recently demoed City Hall section is awash with bloody portraits, fleshy sculptures and other horrifying works of art, which proves that this particular influence runs deep.

Game director John Johanas, on the other hand, is a big fan of recent horror movies like Don’t Breathe and It Follows. But it’s surreal and psychological movies like Jacob’s Ladder and The Cell that have had the longest lasting impact.

“There’s some areas that take a surreal turn of events,” he told us. “We took a look at movies like The Cell and saw how they created this sort of dream landscape.

“I saw The Cell when I was probably way too young. And even though it’s a psychological thriller when you look at it now, when you’re young, that’s one of the scariest movies ever.”

Featuring surrealist imagery inspired by artists such as Odd Nerdrum and H. R. Giger, The Cell revolves around a child psychologist who enters the twisted mind of a serial killer in order to discover the whereabouts of his most recent victim.

Sounds a bit like The Evil Within 2 and its STEM world, doesn’t it?

We’ll see what else has influenced The Evil Within 2 when it launches for PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 13.
