Second Victim Brain Dead Following Paris Cryotherapy Chamber Incident

Paris – A second individual critically injured following a cryotherapy chamber incident at a sports center in Paris has been declared brain dead, authorities have confirmed. The incident, suspected to be caused by a nitrogen leak during a cryotherapy session, occurred at approximately 6:20 PM on April 14th at the ‘On Air’ gym, a local sports center in Paris’s 11th arrondissement. This cryotherapy accident highlights the potential dangers associated with these increasingly popular treatments.

Incident Details and Investigation

Initial reports indicated that a gym employee in her late twenties perished at the scene of the cryotherapy accident. A client in her thirties was immediately transported to Lariboisière Hospital in critical condition following the incident. The Paris public prosecutor’s office has now confirmed that doctors declared the client brain dead on April 17th.

Immediately following the incident, officials stated that an investigation into the cause of death has been initiated. Sources involved in the investigation suggest a nitrogen leak from the cryochamber is the likely cause of the reported poisoning.

Autopsy Findings

The autopsy of the deceased employee revealed the cause of death as suffocation resulting from oxygen deprivation. While the precise sequence of events remains under investigation, autopsy findings suggest both victims suffered suffocation within the cryotherapy chamber, pointing towards a nitrogen leak as the primary cause.

Cryotherapy, particularly whole-body cryotherapy, utilizes liquid nitrogen to generate extremely cold environments.

Understanding Cryotherapy and Nitrogen Risks

Nitrogen is a naturally occurring, colorless, and odorless gas that constitutes approximately 80% of the Earth’s atmosphere, with oxygen comprising about 20%. Cryotherapy procedures utilize liquid nitrogen to generate extremely low temperatures.

Typically, individuals undergoing whole-body cryotherapy are exposed to temperatures plummeting to -148 degrees Fahrenheit (-100 degrees Celsius) for sessions lasting up to three minutes within a specialized chamber.

Proponents of whole-body cryotherapy claim its effectiveness in alleviating muscle soreness, stress, rheumatism, and various dermatological conditions. It has gained popularity among athletes and celebrities as an alternative recovery method to traditional ice packs and cold water immersion.

The Dangers of Nitrogen Leaks

However, nitrogen leaks during cryotherapy treatments pose significant health risks and can be fatal. Leaks can occur due to equipment malfunction or improper operation, allowing liquid nitrogen to escape. As liquid nitrogen evaporates upon release, it displaces oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere, markedly reducing oxygen concentration. This oxygen displacement can rapidly lead to asphyxiation, particularly in enclosed spaces like cryotherapy chambers.

Asphyxiation and its Effects

Asphyxiation, or oxygen deprivation, can cause severe brain damage or death. The brain is exceptionally vulnerable to oxygen loss; brain cells can begin to die within minutes of oxygen deprivation.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 PM on April 14th at the ‘On Air’ gym located in the 11th district of Paris.

In promotional material, On Air gym highlighted numerous purported benefits of cryotherapy treatments.

Consequences of Oxygen Deprivation

Extended oxygen deprivation can induce a coma and, in severe, untreated cases, progress to brain death. Brain death is characterized by irreversible cessation of breathing, loss of consciousness, and the inability to regain consciousness, despite the continued presence of a heartbeat – indicating a complete loss of vital brain functions.

Reactions and Previous Incidents

François Vauglin, the mayor of Paris’s 11th arrondissement, described the incident as a ‘tragic accident with devastating consequences,’ highlighting that ‘losing your life during a cryotherapy session is a tragedy, underscoring that this type of treatment is not without risk.’

Cryotherapy procedures have faced scrutiny previously, notably in the United States in 2015, following the death of a woman at a Las Vegas spa. The 24-year-old woman reportedly entered a cryotherapy chamber after closing hours, seeking pain relief, and was discovered deceased the following day by a colleague.

Regulatory Status and Suffocation Statistics

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US has not approved cryotherapy, and there is no official data available on fatalities specifically caused by nitrogen leaks during these procedures. However, it is worth noting that accidental suffocation, from various causes including choking, claims the lives of over 5,000 Americans annually.
