Winds of Winter: ‘George RR Martin in NO RUSH to meet deadline’ and gives reason for delay

The 68-year-old author has been working on A Song of Ice and Fire’s penultimate book for six years now.

In his most recent update he said The Winds of Winter could possibly be released in 2018, but he’s not committed to it.

According to Metro US, Martin is in no rush to hit meet a certain deadline.

In a recent interview with the outlet, the author of the Game of Thrones books has claimed that his slowness is due to the length of his book in comparison to other Fantasy novelists and admits that his ageing doesn’t help.

Martin said: “I did not start to write slower over the years. I was working on the first book for six years and four years on the second one.

“Fantasists who release their novels every year, do not offer books of large volume.

“These are not 1.5k pages like mine, but, for example, 500. In addition, I have not become younger. Age does not add enthusiasm.

The author also says there are two types of writers: the architects who create worlds and plan details before writing and the gardeners – which Martin sees himself as – those who improvise.

On being the gardener type, Martin added: “This approach, of course, has its side effects.

“Several times the plot has led me to a dead end, from where there is no way out. I had to go back and rewrite everything again.”
