Donald Trump Mississippi rally LIVE: President holds MAGA rally for Senate runoff race

After holding a rally earlier in the day in Tupelo, Trump has travelled to Biloxi to lend his support for Mrs Hyde-Smith in her candidacy for the Senate. She is running against Democrat Mike Espy after neither candidate reached a simple majority during the midterm election on November 6. The special election will be held on November 27.

Trump has previously praised Mrs Hyde-Smith at rallies, specifically citing her support for Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing.

He said: “She votes for us and she votes for ‘Make America Great Again.’”

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also attended the rally in Tupelo.

2:14am update: VP Mike Pence takes the stage in Biloxi

Vice President Mike Pence speaks to the crowd in anticipation of Donald Trump.

He said that he was there because “America needs Cindy Hyde-Smith”.

Mr Pence also discussed the accomplishments of the administration since Trump’s election with an emphasis on the US-Mexico border and immigration.

2:05am update: Santa Clause makes surprise appearance at Trump rally

Before Donald Trump takes the stage, several prominent Republicans gave speeches in support of Trump and Cindy Hyde-Smith, but the audience was greeted by a surprise guest.

Santa Clause and Mrs Clause came out to a cheering crowd as they threw memorabilia to the audience.

Trump rallies are prone to having surprise guests including his daughter Ivanka and White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

1:54am update: Crowds gather in Biloxi for Trump rally

Thousands of Trump supporters have gathered in Biloxi, Mississippi to support the president and congressional candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith.

After doors were opened at 10pm Monday evening, the crowds rushed in the try to get the best view of the president for when he speaks.

Some supporters wanted to get a good view so badly that they waiting outside of Mississippi Coast Coliseum for 12 hours.

1:41am update: Who is Mike Espy?

The Democratic candidate for the Mississippi Senate seat, Mike Espy is looking to flip the seat for the Democrats.

Mr Espy was a congressman for Mississippi until former US President Bill Clinton tapped him to be the first African-American to lead the Department of Agriculture.

While he was agriculture secretary, Mr Espy was forced to resign after questions were raised as to whether or not he had received improper gifts.

He was later indicted and then acquitted for this.

Mr Espy has also been criticised by his opponent Cindy Hyde-Smith for a $750,000 (£585,000) payment that he had received from lobbying contract with Ivory Coast ex-President Laurent Gbagbo.

1:28am update: Who is Cindy Hyde-Smith?

Cindy Hyde-Sith is the first woman to represent the state of Mississippi in the US Senate.

She was appointed to fill a vacancy after Thad Cochran stepped down at the beginning of April 2018 due to health concerns. 

Mrs Hyde-Smith was appointed by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.

She is looking to finish the remained of Mr Cochran’s term which concludes in 2021.

Her campaign has been marred by gaffes, the most severe of which saw her ay that she would stand in the front row of a public hanging.

When she was asked if she would attend a hanging, she said that is a local rancher standing next to her “invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row”.

Multiple companies asked for their donations to her campaign back following this remarks.

There was also video of her saying that it would be better if some people were not allowed to vote.

She said: “There’s a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who that maybe we don’t want to vote.

“Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult. And I think that’s a great idea.”

1:12am update: Polls favour Hyde-Smith to win special election

While Mike Espy is predicted to outperform most Democrats in the special election, polls still have Cindy Hyde-Smith as the favoured candidate to win.

According to a poll Conducted from November 19 to November 24, Mrs Hyde-Smith is leading Mr Espy in the polls 54-44.

Another poll taken in October has Mrs Hyde-Smith leading with an even larger margin of 50-36.

1:05am update: Nooses found in front of Mississippi State Capitol

A day before the special election is to take place, nooses were found along with sings outside of the state’s Capitol.

One sign read: “We’re hanging nooses to remind people that times haven’t changed.”

US Attorney Mike Hurst of Mississippi’s Southern District said: “Let me be perfectly clear — there is absolutely no place in our state for these unacceptable symbols or tactics to intimidate others.”

An investigation is underway to find whoever perpetrated this crime.
