Donald Trump trade war means US has lost ALL credibility, Erdogan claims

Mr Erdogan was speaking as the Turkish lira crisis continues to grip the country, sparked after the US President imposed a raft of sanctions as part of a diplomatic row.

The currency has plunged a staggering 40 per cent since the start of the year, with fears Turkey is heading for a long recession.

Mr Trump also issued biting sanctions against Russia, China, Iran and other countries since taking office.

In an incendiary blast at the US leader, Mr Erdogan also attacked Washington after Mr Trump pulled the US out of the key global nuclear deal with Iran.

According to Turkey’s President, The US has now “lost its credibility engaging in a trade war with the world”.

Mr Erdogan said: “The US has embarked on a false path of solving political problems not through negotiations, but through the language of blackmail and threats.

“It’s absolutely wrong to use sanctions when all the issues can be easily solved through monitoring, carried out by the international organisations.”

He added: “It’s paramount for us that Iran isn’t isolated from political decisions that shape the future of the region.”

Turkey’s economy was robust enough to handle the sanctions imposed by the White House, Mr Erdogan said.

And in another broadside, Mr Erdogan said the US “continues to cooperate with terrorist organisations” in the Syria crisis, singling out Washington’s support for Kurdish militias.

Kurdish fighters have been a key US ally in the battle against Islamic State during the bitter Syrian war.

But Ankara considers the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as a terrorist group and Mr Erdogan has vowed to make northern Iraq “completely clear” of Kurdish armed forces.

Mr Erdogan’s comments come as relations between Washington and Ankara continue to worsen, with the US accusing Turkey of holding jailed US pastor Andrew Brunson hostage.

Turkish plans to buy Russian S-400 missile systems inflamed tensions further between the two countries.

Mr Trump has hit Turkey with 50 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, as well as blacklisting government officials over Mr Brunson’s imprisonment.

The US measures have hit Turkey’s economy hard, with its currency the lira plumetting in value.

Turkey has retaliated with tariffs of its own on 22 types of American goods.

“We will resolutely fight with this perverted consciousness, which tries to impose sanctions on us, justifying it by some kind of pastor,” Erdogan said.
