Real Madrid star Gareth Bale did not sign for Manchester United – with the reason why now revealed.
The Wales international was earmarked as a top Red Devils transfer target at the start of the summer and, with the player struggling for game time, an Old Trafford move was expected.
However, Marca claim Bale chose to stay at Real Madrid amid United’s interest because of what the Spanish giants told him.
The club hierarchy supposedly sat him down and assured him he would be Cristiano Ronaldo’s successor, which was enough for him to stay. New boss Julen Lopetegui also expressed a desire to keep Bale.
Real Madrid may sign Lazio powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic-Savic before the European transfer window shuts on August 31.

The Serbia international is reportedly weighing up whether to leave Lazio in the wake of their defeat to Napoli this weekend.
Real will be forced to launch a massive £145million (€160m) bid in order to lure him to the Bernabeu though, due to Lazio’s asking price.
Real are planning one last assault on Chelsea star Eden Hazard before the transfer deadline.
The Mirror claim Los Blancos still want the player.
Chelsea have insisted Hazard is not for sale at any price but Real may bid anyway, given their need to sign a blockbuster Ronaldo replacement.
They reportedly want Hazard to know how much they crave his signature.
But, with the player’s contract expiring in 2020, a move further down the line appears likeliest.
Meanwhile, Real boss Julen Lopetegui has lauded Bale after his goal against Getafe in their 2-0 La Liga win on Sunday.
He said: “I liked the team’s performance in general and Bale had a very good match.
“He offers lots of different things, like the other players.
“We must continue working, the team always comes before individual talent and that goes for Bale too.”
