‘Our steel industry is BOOMING’ – Donald Trump makes SHOCK boast as tariffs begin to bite

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, he said: “Our steel industry is one of the talks of the world.

“It’s booming.”

Trump went on to argue that conserving the US steel industry is vital to national security.

He nevertheless admitted the tariffs might make steel “a little more expensive” in the short-term, but insisted prices will fall in the long-term.

The US leader also claimed that tariffs will make competition “internal, like it used to be in the old days when we actually had steel”.

China responded firmly and accused the country of starting “the largest trade war in economic history to date”.

They added that the move was a clear violation of World Trade Organisation rules.

China went on to implement retaliatory tariffs of its own on US goods.

Steel users across the US have already blamed President Trump’s sanctions for higher costs and in some cases job losses.

A nail company in Missouri attracted significant attention after stating that the tariffs had led to a 70 percent reduction in orders.

As a result, the company claimed it has had to cut its workforce by 25 percent.

Trump also used the interview to predict a strong performance in November’s mid-term elections, saying he expects the Republicans to do “great”.

He added: “I think the Democrats give up when I turn out.

“It’s a lot of work for me. I have to make 50 stops, it’s a lot.

“There aren’t a lot of people that can do that, physically.”

A recent poll found that 39 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s performance, whilst 56% disapprove.
