Aston Villa player ratings vs PSG: Duo shine but star gets 4/10 in Champions League epic

Importance Score: 6 / 100 🟠

Aston Villa’s journey in the Champions League concluded after a dramatic encounter against Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park, despite a spirited attempt to overturn a first-leg deficit. Entering the second leg trailing 3-1, the home side faced a significant challenge which became even steeper within the opening half-hour. PSG capitalized on swift breaks, with Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes each finding the net to extend their advantage and seemingly secure their progression in the competition.

However, Youri Tielemans ignited hope for Villa just before halftime with a deflected strike. The atmosphere reached fever pitch in the second half as John McGinn unleashed a long-range effort, also via a deflection, to narrow the gap further. Ezri Konsa then further reduced the aggregate score, bringing Villa within a single goal of parity. Despite creating further opportunities, Unai Emery’s team were ultimately unable to find the decisive goal required to force extra time, ending their European dreams for this season.

Aston Villa Player Performance Analysis: Champions League Clash Against PSG

Starting Players

Emiliano Martinez: 6

After a strong showing in Paris, Martinez endured a difficult start at home. PSG’s opening goal stemmed from an uncharacteristic error, as he spilled a routine save directly into Hakimi’s path. While he had little chance of stopping Mendes’ strike, his earlier mistake proved costly. He did redeem himself somewhat with a crucial late save from Desire Doue.

Matty Cash: 6

Cash struggled during the initial phase of the match as PSG’s attack posed significant problems. He appeared overly eager to press high up the pitch, leaving space in behind and getting caught out of position on several occasions.

Ezri Konsa: 7

Following a shaky defensive start for the team, Konsa grew in confidence and composure as the match progressed. His well-taken second-half goal, a composed finish from a Marcus Rashford cut-back, ignited the Villa Park crowd. However, he also missed a headed opportunity that could have leveled the aggregate score.

Pau Torres: 4

Torres bore partial responsibility for the first goal, caught out of position as PSG launched their counter-attack and then appearing to hesitate, anticipating Martinez to collect the ball. He looked unsettled defensively and also squandered two chances at the other end in the first half, volleying directly at Donnaruma and then opting to cross when a shot seemed the better option. A misplaced pass further compounded a night to forget for the defender.

Lucas Digne: 6

Digne also experienced a challenging start against the dynamic Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. However, he improved significantly after the first 30 minutes, becoming more involved in attacking plays and offering a better outlet going forward.

Midfielders

Boubacar Kamara: 6

Kamara displayed his usual high energy levels and became more influential as Villa gained control of possession. However, a careless flick in midfield conceded possession in a promising attacking situation.

Amadou Onana: 7

Onana began brightly, highlighted by an early sliding tackle that initiated a Villa attack. He also played a key role in the build-up to Tielemans’ goal. He maintained good control and distribution of the ball throughout his time on the pitch.

Youri Tielemans: 8

Tielemans benefited from a slice of luck with his deflected goal, but his overall performance warranted the reward. He made a significant impact in attack and contributed effectively defensively as well.

Forwards

Morgan Rogers: 8

Rogers posed a consistent threat with his direct and powerful runs forward. He fired a long-range shot narrowly over the bar in the second half and generated anticipation each time he received possession in attacking areas.

John McGinn: 9

The decision to substitute McGinn when the score was 3-2 appeared questionable, suggesting fatigue as the primary factor. He provided the assist for Tielemans’ opening goal and scored a stunning goal himself to level the match on the night. He delivered a tireless performance, fully deserving of the standing ovation he received upon his exit.

Marcus Rashford: 9

Rashford endured a nightmare start, carelessly giving away possession which led directly to PSG’s opening goal. However, he was transformed in the second half, drawing an excellent save from Donnarumma and then outmaneuvering two defenders to set up Konsa’s goal. He also provided another opportunity for the defender, which should have resulted in the equalizing header.

Substitutes

Jacob Ramsey (for Onana, 67 mins): 6

Ramsey struggled to inject the impetus Villa desperately needed in the latter stages of the match.

Ian Maatsen (for Digne, 76 mins): 5

Maatsen looked exposed as PSG exploited spaces on the counter-attack late in the game. He had a last-ditch volley agonizingly blocked.

Marco Asensio (for McGinn, 66 mins): 6

Asensio had a golden opportunity to level the tie but was denied by another superb save from the inspired Donnarumma.

Ross Barkley (for Tielemans, 88 mins): N/A

Barkley was introduced too late to exert any meaningful influence on the game.

Ollie Watkins (for Rashford, 76 mins): 6

Watkins’ introduction was delayed, surprisingly, even after Villa scored their third goal, raising questions about Unai Emery’s tactical decision-making. He was not presented with any clear-cut chances after coming on.
