Northeast Braces for Winter Weather: Snow, Rain, and Wind Expected

A lingering low-pressure system is set to deliver a mix of snow, rain, and high winds across the Northeast region this weekend, prompting weather alerts and impacting travel.

Winter Weather Alerts Issued

Winter weather alerts are currently in effect from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET for several mountainous areas, including portions of Vermont’s Green Mountains, Massachusetts’ Berkshires, and New York’s Catskill Mountains. Residents and travelers in these areas should be prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.

Snowfall Accumulation Across Multiple States

Further snowfall is anticipated, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible across sections of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. This fresh snow may create slick roadways and reduce visibility, particularly in higher elevations.

Significant Snowfall Already Recorded

As of 11 a.m. ET, substantial snowfall totals have already been recorded in some locations. Princeton, Massachusetts, reported the highest accumulation with 9 inches of snow. Austerlitz, New York, experienced 5.8 inches, while both Twin Lakes, Pennsylvania, and High Point, New Jersey, registered 5 inches of wintry precipitation.

Power Disruptions Reported

Snowfall was observed in the Catskills and Albany regions early Saturday. As of 1:30 p.m. E.T., reports indicate that over 2,300 utility customers in New York are currently without power, according to PowerOutage.us. The ongoing weather system may lead to additional power disruptions throughout the day.

Below Normal Temperatures Expected

Temperatures in the Northeast are also experiencing a dip, falling 10 to 20 degrees below the seasonal average on Saturday. However, forecasters predict a return to typical seasonal high temperatures by Sunday.

Rain Forecast for the Region

Intermittent rain is also affecting the region and is expected to persist through Saturday afternoon. Most areas are anticipated to experience clearing skies and drier conditions by Sunday morning.

Further Weather System Approaching New England on Sunday

Another wave of rain and snow, primarily at higher elevations, is forecasted to move inland across New England on Sunday. Maine is expected to experience the most significant impacts from this subsequent weather system.

No Severe Weather Anticipated

Despite the winter weather conditions, current forecasts indicate that severe weather or flash flooding is not expected at this time.
