Nightclub Roof Collapse in Dominican Republic Claims Dozens, Including Former MLB Pitcher Octavio Dotel
A devastating tragedy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has resulted in the deaths of at least 58 individuals, including former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel. The roof of a nightclub venue unexpectedly gave way in the early hours of Tuesday morning, causing catastrophic damage and injuring approximately 160 others. The incident occurred during a merengue concert at the nightclub, which was reportedly attended by a large crowd comprising athletes and politicians.
Former Baseball Star Among Fatalities
Octavio Dotel, aged 51, tragically perished in the nightclub collapse. Dotel enjoyed a prominent 15-season career in Major League Baseball, commencing with the New York Mets in 1999. He notably played for a record-setting 13 different franchises, with a significant tenure with the Houston Astros from 2000 to 2004. A career highlight for Dotel was his contribution to the St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series victory in 2011. His final season in the major leagues was with the Detroit Tigers in 2013. Widely recognized as a formidable strikeout pitcher, Dotel was considered among the elite relief pitchers during his prime.
Tributes and Condolences
The Houston Astros organization expressed their sorrow in a statement released on Tuesday: “We are heartbroken to learn the tragic news that former Astros pitcher Octavio Dotel was among several individuals that passed away when a roof collapsed in his native Dominican Republic last night. During his time in Houston, he was one of baseball’s premier relief pitchers and a vital component of a dominant bullpen, featuring Hall of Famer Billy Wagner and All-Star Brad Lidge. A true workhorse, Dotel’s league-leading 159 appearances in 2002-03 were second in the Majors in that span, during which he achieved a remarkable 2.15 ERA.”
During a Mets-Marlins broadcast on Tuesday afternoon, veteran Mets play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen shared his sentiments, stating, “Everyone who ever met Octavio loved him.”
Another Baseball Figure Lost
Tragically, another Dominican baseball player, Tony Blanco, also lost his life in the collapse. Blanco briefly played for the Washington Nationals in 2005.

Dotel’s Journey to the Majors
Dotel’s path to Major League Baseball was marked by significant personal hardship, including the tragic murder of his father during a robbery. Dotel revealed that he channeled his emotions into baseball as a coping mechanism following his father’s death. “I can do nothing if I go to the ballpark and think about him all the time,” Dotel once said. “I just have to keep playing hard and get what I’m looking for. I think God helps me because I’m here. I’m here and I appreciate it. I would enjoy it more if my dad was still here, but everybody’s got to die.”
Nightclub Responds to Tragedy
Jet Set, the Santo Domingo nightclub at the center of Tuesday’s catastrophe, has stated that they are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation by authorities. In a public statement, the nightclub conveyed, “The loss of human life leaves us in a state of deep pain and dismay.”
