Former This Morning Editor Martin Frizell Announces New True Crime Podcast Venture
Martin Frizell, previously the editor of ITV’s flagship daytime programme This Morning, has revealed his return to broadcasting with a new weekly podcast, titled “This Much Is True Crime.” This announcement comes after Frizell stepped down from his role at This Morning in November to dedicate time to caring for his wife, Fiona Phillips, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Martin Frizell’s Return to Broadcasting with “This Much Is True Crime”
The 66-year-old former television executive shared news of his latest project via Instagram, indicating the imminent launch of the true crime podcast. In this venture, Martin Frizell will collaborate with renowned criminologist Professor David Wilson to delve into some of history’s most significant criminal cases.
Podcast Partnership with Criminologist David Wilson
Frizell confirmed on social media that “This Much Is True Crime” is forthcoming, though an exact release date remains unconfirmed.
Addressing his followers, he hinted at the podcast’s compelling nature, suggesting it could rival popular streaming content. He stated:
- “Takes a prolific serial killer to knock Adolescence off the No1 Netflix spot.”
- “Gone Girls profiles America’s modern day Jack the Ripper and his body count may not be over yet!”
He further elaborated on the podcast’s focus, adding:

“Coming soon is This Much is True Crime, a new weekly podcast with Britain’s leading criminologist (and serial killer expert) Prof David Wilson and me (Fred West and many other crime reports).”
Podcast Content and Investigative Focus
Frizell outlined the thematic scope of “This Much Is True Crime,” stating, “If it’s in the headlines or the ratings, we’re talking about it. We start with Gone Girls. Not just a whodunnit but a whydunnit?” This suggests the podcast will explore high-profile crime stories, examining not only the details of the crimes but also the underlying motivations.
Departure from This Morning Preceded Podcast Announcement
This new career chapter follows Martin Frizell’s departure from This Morning earlier this year. His resignation was motivated by a desire to prioritize his family and provide dedicated care for his wife, Fiona Phillips, the former GMTV presenter who received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2022.
Reasons for Leaving This Morning
In his departure announcement, Frizell explained his decision:
“Next year I’m expecting my family priorities to change so I need to free up time for them. I love my team at ITV and will miss them and the thrill of live telly but it’s an always on, 24 hours a day, seven days a week commitment and I won’t be able to do both.”
Vivek Sharma Appointed as Successor
In March, Vivek Sharma succeeded Martin Frizell as editor of This Morning. Sharma previously served as associate editor for the programme for over a year.
