John Higgins Clinches Tour Championship Title After Thrilling Duel with Mark Selby

Veteran snooker icon John Higgins exhibited a masterful display to overcome Mark Selby 10-8 and seize the Tour Championship crown in Manchester. In a captivating final, the Scottish cueist delivered a vintage performance, extending his impressive form and issuing a strong statement to rivals ahead of the highly anticipated World Championship commencing on April 19th. Higgins’ triumph marks his second major ranking title in quick succession.

Vintage Higgins Performance Silences Selby

Higgins initiated the match strongly on Sunday, establishing a commanding 5-1 advantage. However, Selby mounted a formidable response, perplexing Higgins by claiming seven consecutive frames and surging ahead 8-5. Facing a significant deficit, the resilient 49-year-old Higgins demonstrated his enduring class.

Record-Breaking Century Spree Secures Victory

In a remarkable turnaround, Higgins elevated his game, amassing an unprecedented eight century breaks – a new record for a best-of-19 frame match. This exceptional scoring barrage propelled him back into the lead. He sealed the victory with a magnificent 132 clearance, securing the £150,000 top prize in addition to the £10,000 high break bonus. This victory follows his previous success at the World Open on March 1st against Joe O’Connor.

“My Best Ever Win” – Higgins’ Raw Emotion

Following his hard-fought victory, a visibly moved Higgins expressed profound emotion, labelling the triumph as the pinnacle achievement of his distinguished career. Speaking to interviewer Rob Walker, Higgins conveyed the immense challenge posed by his opponent. He stated:

  • “You are competing against a phenomenal player. To lead 5-1 and then find yourself trailing 8-5, typically you don’t recover and win five frames in a row against Mark Selby.”
  • “Somehow, I managed to achieve it, which feels unbelievable. It’s incredibly tough. It feels like hitting an impenetrable wall, a feeling I’ve experienced numerous times against him over the years. His play reaches incredible levels. In my opinion, this ranks as my greatest ever victory.”

Higgins further emphasized the significance of the win, stating, “It is truly my best-ever win, surpassing even world titles or UK Championship titles. Considering the level Mark was playing at to reach 8-5, his head must have been spinning – and mine certainly was!”

He continued, “I’m unsure how I managed to rally like before. Usually, he capitalizes and wins decisively, such as the 10-5 defeat I suffered at the British Open. This victory is my best ever, he’s an exceptional champion, and this truly is my best ever win.”

Reflecting on his mental fortitude, Higgins shared, “You never know when these opportunities will arise again. I had the self-assurance to believe that when I find myself in these situations, I am capable of succeeding.”

“Over the past three or four years, self-doubt had crept in, making it particularly rewarding to overcome that hurdle and once again challenge these elite players. I am immensely proud.”

Emotional Post-Match Interview

Interviewer Walker then touched upon the presence of Higgins’ wife and children in the audience, triggering a wave of emotion. The former world number one was overcome with tears, unable to respond verbally. Walker concluded the heartfelt interview with a comforting hug.

World Championship Implications

Historically, no player has ever won the Tour Championship and subsequently claimed the World Championship title in the same month. Despite this statistic, Higgins’ current form will undoubtedly make him a formidable contender at the Crucible Theatre. He will be aiming to further solidify his legendary status in the sport.
