Helen Mirren Critiques James Bond Franchise, Cites “Profound Sexism”

Dame Helen Mirren has revealed her long-held reservations about the James Bond film series, asserting that the iconic franchise is “drenched” in “profound sexism.” In a recent interview, the acclaimed actress, known for her role as Queen Elizabeth II and currently starring in “Mobland” alongside former 007 actor Pierce Brosnan, voiced her concerns regarding the portrayal of women within the Bond narratives. Her remarks come amidst discussions about Amazon MGM Studios assuming creative command of the James Bond franchise.

Mirren’s Perspective on James Bond

In a conversation with The Evening Standard, Mirren stated, “I have to say I was never a great fan [of Bond].” This admission arrives after previous “Bond girl” Valerie Leon expressed apprehension over the franchise’s future under American stewardship, suggesting it “won’t be [British] anymore.” Mirren, aged 79, addressed these broader industry anxieties while clarifying her personal stance on the films themselves.

Despite her reservations about the spy saga, Mirren expressed admiration for two prominent James Bond actors. “I’m a huge fan of Pierce Brosnan, I mean massive fan,” she emphasized. “Obviously, he’s gorgeous and everything, and I think he’s fabulous in MobLand, but he also happens to be one of the nicest people you’ll ever have the pleasure to work with. And indeed Daniel Craig, who I’ve met and know a little bit. Again, a very lovely gracious person.”

Concerns Regarding Gender Portrayal

Expanding on her critique, Mirren elaborated, “The whole series of James Bond, it was not my thing. It really wasn’t. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond.”

While not advocating for a female iteration of Bond, Mirren suggested a different avenue for female representation in espionage cinema. The celebrated performer proposed that the film industry should explore stories centered on historical female figures within the world of espionage.

Highlighting Women in Espionage

“The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism,” Mirren reiterated. She emphasized the significant and historically crucial role of women in covert operations. “Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been. And very brave,” the “1923” star affirmed. “If you hear about what women did in the French Resistance, they’re amazingly, unbelievably courageous. So I would tell real stories about extraordinary women who’ve worked in that world.”

Amazon’s Acquisition and Franchise Future

Earlier this year, in February, the announcement surfaced that Amazon MGM Studios would establish a new entity to manage the James Bond intellectual property rights. Long-standing producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are set to remain as co-owners, ensuring continuity in the franchise’s stewardship.
