Trump Says “Many Elements” of Ukraine Peace Agreement Agreed With Putin
Upcoming Phone Call Fuels Hopes for Ceasefire
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that “many elements” of a peace agreement in Ukraine have been agreed upon with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, ahead of their much-anticipated phone call. The call is scheduled for Tuesday morning, according to a post on Truth Social.
While progress has been made, “much remains” to be finalized, Trump said. He emphasized the urgency, stating: “Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW.”
Earlier, Trump told reporters that he is making efforts “to work a peace agreement, a ceasefire and peace, and I think we’ll be able to do it.”
Differing Perspectives on Peace Talks
Ukraine’s Position
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his nightly address on Monday, accused Putin of prolonging the war. He asserted, “This proposal could have been implemented long ago,” adding that “every day in wartime means human lives.”
Inconsistencies in the U.S. Administration
There have been varying reports from within the Trump administration regarding the advancement of ceasefire talks. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, after a meeting in Jeddah with Ukrainian officials, indicated that the “bulk” of the conversation centered on the “negotiation process” rather than specific conditions. Furthermore, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, who met with Putin in Moscow, has adopted a more cautious tone.

International Pressure for Peace
The UK and France have urged Putin to demonstrate a genuine commitment to reaching a peace deal with Ukraine.
- French President Emmanuel Macron lauded Zelensky’s “courage” in agreeing to a ceasefire proposal, challenging Russia to reciprocate. “Enough deaths. Enough lives destroyed. Enough destruction. The guns must fall silent,” Macron stated.
- UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for a “full and unconditional ceasefire now,” stating he had seen “no sign” of Putin’s seriousness about a peace deal, and warned of further actions the UK and its allies could take to encourage serious negotiation.
White House Optimism
The White House expressed greater optimism about the talks, suggesting peace in Ukraine has “never been closer.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was “determined” to secure a peace deal. Regarding the talks’ scope, she mentioned a power plant on the border of Russia and Ukraine as a potential discussion point.
This likely refers to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, occupied by Russian forces since March 2022. Concerns over a nuclear incident persist due to ongoing fighting.
Negotiation Sticking Points
When asked about ceasefire negotiation concessions, Trump mentioned discussions involving “land” and “power plants,” indicating consideration of dividing up assets. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the leaders’ potential discussion topics.
While Putin has expressed support for a ceasefire previously, he has established conditions for achieving peace. A key point of contention is Russia’s Western Kursk region, where Ukraine launched a military incursion last August. Russia has pushed to regain control and claims it now fully possesses this territory.
Conditions for Peace
Putin has raised questions about ceasefire monitoring along the eastern frontline and stated his unwillingness to accept NATO troops in the territory.
- The peace proposal on the table, discussed by Ukrainian and American delegates in Saudi Arabia last week, includes proposals for a 30-day ceasefire.
- Ukraine has expressed its readiness to accept, but some complications might arise.
- Other Nations involved: France’s President Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, also stressed their continuous aid for Ukraine.
