‘The EU has been VERY UNFAIR’ Donald Trump blasts Brussels as he threatens TRADE WAR

In a shock outburst, Mr Trump took aim at EU trade policies during a joint press conference with Sweden‘s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.

The billionaire US president made the comments while defending his proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

He said: “The United States has been mistreated and taken advantage of by other countries for many, many decades.

“We have a trade deficit of $800bn dollars a year, and the European Union has been particularly tough on the United States.

“They make it almost impossible to business with them, and yet they send their cars and everything else back into the United States.

“They can do whatever they like, but if they do that, then we put a tax of 25 per cent on their cars, and believe me, they won’t be doing it for very long.

“The European Union has not been treating us well and it’s been a very very unfair trade situation.

“I’m here to protect our workers and our companies. We cannot lose our steel industry our aluminium industry.

“If the European Union takes off some of the horrible barriers that make it impossible for our product to go into there, then we can start talking.

“Otherwise, we’re going to leave it as it is. We have no choice but to straighten it out.”

When asked about Sweden’s stance, Mr Lofven said his country’s trade policy was decided by the EU.

But he said it was important for the EU and US to continue to “co-operate” because Sweden’s economy is “dependant” on free trade.

He told reporters: “Swedish prosperity is based on co-operation, competitiveness and free trade. I am convinced that the increased tariffs will hurt us all in the long run.

“As a Swede, I of course support the efforts of the European Union to achieve trade with as few obstacles as possible.”
