PSG 1-1 REAL MADRID

Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid do battle at the Parc des Princes for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Defending champions Madrid, who are looking to win the competition for a fourth time in five years, hold a 3-1 lead from the first leg at the Bernabeu.

With Luka Modric and Toni Kroos having returned to training on Sunday after injuries and Marcelo also fit and playing again, Madrid could be at full strength for the match.

PSG boss Unai Emery is not so fortunate however, with star man Neymar set to miss the rest of the season with a broken metatarsal.

73: Zinedine Zidane sends Toni Kross on to help Real Madrid stop any prospect of a comeback.

PSG 1-1 REAL MADRID – CAVANI

71: Could they? Three goals required in 19 minutes…

The ten-men of Paris St-Germain pull one back in scrappy fashion with Edinson Cavani eventually prodding over the line.

PSG 0-1 REAL MADRID

70: Easy pickings for Real Madrid now. They were already in complete control before Verratti decided to pick a fight with the referee over nothing.

PSG 0-1 REAL MADRID – RED CARD

67: PSG are imploding in spectacular fashion now. Marco Verratti picks up his second booking of the night for dissent of all things. Mindless.

66: PSG have run out of ideas. Real Madrid are playing keep-ball as the minutes tick away.

62: Remember, PSG now need three unanswered goals to force extra time.

60: Cavani goes for a spectacular bicycle kick but Varane gets his body in the way and the subsequent corner is cleared.

The pattern is now set. PSG are launching everyone forward and Real Madrid will break in numbers. Almost certainly another goal on the way.

56: Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in all eight of his Champions League games this season, netting 12 goals.

PSG 0-1 REAL MADRID – RONALDO

54: Guess who…

Through a thick haze of flare smoke, Cristiano Ronaldo rises like a heroic salmon to give Real Madrid the lead, and kill this tie off once and for all.

Asensio steals possession from Alves before laying it off to Vazquez, whose pin-point cross is powered home by Ronaldo.

53: I think we were all expecting the net to ripple as Ronaldo unleashes a full-blooded header goalwards, but it flew narrowly past the post.

48: Referee has stopped play for a few minutes. The PSG fans have broken out hundreds of flares with the stands completely lit red.

Started up again now.

45: We’re back underway. Alves and Di Maria were discussing tactics in the tunnel before they came out. I hope it was something along the lines of: “Let’s effing score!”

DROUGHT

HT: Paris Saint-Germain mustered just three shots against Real Madrid in the first half; the lowest total they’ve managed at home in the Champions League since October 2015.

HT: What the hell was that?! Defending champions against the tournament favourites in one of the least entertaining games I’ve seen.

44: It’s half-time over in the game at Anfield and I can only describe it as a borefest. 0-0 and almost no chances to speak of.

42: That’s more like it from the hosts. Ramos stops playing because he thinks Mbappe is offside, but he’s on.

The youngster should cross it for Cavani, who’s unmarked in the six-yard box, but he decides to shoot from an acute angle and Navas makes a relatively comfortable stop.

39: Carvajal collects a clearance but slices it back to Spain.

38: Benzema! The Frenchman had to score that. He breaks the offside trap and has himself a one-on-one with Areola, who makes himself big to foil the rather tame effort.

36: Promising opening for PSG. Kovacic receives a yellow for a poor foul on Di Maria, who picks himself up and delivers a ghastly cross that fails to beat the first man.

33: PSG really need to up their game in the final third. Tempo, quality and finishing are all below par. Too easy for Real Madrid to keep the front three quiet.

30: Mbappe cuts inside from the left and bends an effort a few yards wide of the post. Might be PSG’s best effort actually.

28: Nothing doing. Di Maria’s effort skims off the wall and behind for a corner, which Ramos clears.

27: What an anti-climax. Both teams are struggling to create anything noteworthy.

But could this be the moment. Mbappe draws a free-kick within shooting range after Casemiro took the bait.

Di Maria is standing over it…

24: You know the game isn’t a classic when the commentators are discussing the playing surface. Prepared by the former Aston Villa groundsman…

21: That pesky Sergio Ramos nearly puts this tie to bed. He turns a low corner goalwards but Areola makes a smart save to deny him.

Verratti booked for a late challenge on Casemiro. Needless really.

16: Chance! Mbappe breaks the line and tries to find Cavani in the middle, but his cutback is blocked.

13: Neither side are at their best. PSG are trying to force it too quickly while the visitors are sloppy in possession.

10: So Real Madrid have managed to navigate their way through the opening ten minutes. Still looking shakey though.

The crowd erupts as PSG win themselves a corner. Di Maria delivers… cleared and Asensio breaks.

He switches play with a fabulous 40-yard crossfield pass to Benzema, whose shot is deflected behind for a corner.

6: Hardly a convincing start from the visitors. Kovacic and Ramos have both attempted rushed clearances and twice they’ve ballooned them upwards into their own penalty area.

Bit wobbly and it’s giving the hosts confidence.

3: You could barely see the pitch in the opening 60 seconds after the PSG ultras threw firecrackers around the stands. Health and safety officer rolling in his grave…

1: And we’re underway folks. Atmosphere is absolutely bouncing here. One goal from the visitors and that could all change…

LAMPARD ON DI MARIA

19:30: “He obviously suffered in the Premier League,” Lampard said.

“I think the physicality of the league was a problem for him. I think this is probably a better home for him, the Champions League, with the talent and quality he has.

“Physically he doesn’t have to do too much, he’s very bright. He’s very bright and quick, great left foot. I think he can be dangerous tonight for Real Madrid.

“They’re going to miss Neymar, anybody would. But this fella is top quality.”

PSG WILL KO REAL

19:20: Oh, I didn’t realise Sir Charlie Nicholas had already decided the outcome of this match.

Shall we bother playing?

Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal and Scotland forward Nicholas is convinced PSG will knock Real Madrid out tonight, even without Neymar.

“I think Cavani, if Mbappe plays, Di Maria could come into the team. It is at home, I do think that Real Madrid are all out for this competition. I fancy PSG to qualify.”

WAKEY WAKEY…

19:10: There’s certainly less terrifying alarm clocks on the market.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen this already but Real Madrid’s preparations for tonight’s Champions League clash were disrupted by Paris Saint-Germain ultras who set off fireworks at their hotel in the middle of the night.

Around 50 PSG supporters met up outside the Hotel du Collectionneur, near the Arc de Triomphe, at 1.30am this morning before making a racket in a bid to deprive Zinedine Zidane’s squad of sleep.

The police soon arrived at the scene after being called by Real Madrid’s security team.

Check out the video. I’m surprised the footage didn’t show Sergio Ramos flying out the doors in his slippers to pole-axe the lot of them…

TEAM NEWS – PSG

19:05: Wow, Unai Emery can’t have thought too much of Troyes…

He’s made seven changes from the side that won 2-0 over the weekend.

Alphonse Areola, Thiago Silva, Adrien Rabiot and Angel Di Maria are the ones to keep their places with the latter joining Ederson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe in the front three.

No pressure, Angel…

TEAM NEWS – REAL MADRID

19:00: Rumours of Gareth Bale’s departure might have been fuelled with Zinedine Zidane’s team selection.

The Welshman has been dropped for tonight’s crucial clash with with Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio preferred on the flanks.

Elsewhere Luka Modric and Toni Kroos have not fully recovered from injury, so they join Bale on the bench.

The full changes from Saturday’s 2-0 win over Getafe include Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Lucas Vazquez, Marco Asensio and Mateo Kovacic in for Nacho, Theo Hernandez, Gareth Bale, Marcos Llorente and Isco.

NO NEYMAR, NO HOPE?

18:50: The loss of the most expensive player in history is undoubtedly a huge blow to PSG’s hopes of reaching the last eight, but the French giants are by no means a one-man team.

Mbappe has the weapons to terrorise any defence while the prolific Edinson Cavani has again proved his scoring prowess this season with 32 goals already.

Former Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, Julian Draxler and Javier Pastore offer further attacking options for Emery so the absence of Neymar may not be as keenly felt as first feared.

Still, could have done without the £198million hole in the team-sheet…

Things look bleak for the hosts but it’s not like they have to beat a team jam-packed with international superstars and the highest scoring player to ever grace the Champions League.
