Roger Federer makes Australian Open claim about Rotterdam tournament

Federer sealed his 20th Grand Slam title with victory over Marin Cilic in Melbourne last month.

The 36-year-old is aiming to become the oldest man since Andre Agassi in ATP Tour history to reach No 1.

He’s within 155 points of old foe Rafael Nadal who won’t return to action until the end of the month in Acapulco, and he will get back to the top of the rankings should he reach the semi-finals of the ABN AMRO World Tennis tournament.

The Swiss legend managed to get a wildcard for the competition in Rotterdam and he tasted success there in 2005 and 2012.

Federer excels on any surface and especially enjoys playing on lightning quick courts.

And he has explained what the best approach will be in order to do well in Rotterdam.

“You’ve got to be sharp, explosive, quick in your decision-making,” he said.

“Very similar to fast-court tennis outdoors like in Australia for instance.

“Sometimes people struggle with the light. The artificial light for some makes it very difficult to see the ball whereas outdoors maybe it’s more clear, I’m not sure.

“I think playing aggressive, playing forward and taking charge of the point is definitely what you should be doing indoors.”

Federer begins his Rotterdam campaign against Ruben Bemelmans tomorrow (9am).
