Liverpool transfer news: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move is not good for him – Bob Wilson

The England midfielder completed his move from Arsenal this afternoon after rejecting a transfer to Chelsea.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is keen to play through the middle and snubbed Chelsea for a fear of being used at wing-back, where Arsenal had begun playing him.

And Wilson, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, thinks the move is a big blow for Arsenal, but isn’t sure it’s a great switch for the player.

“I’m particularly upset about Alex,” Wilson said on BBC 5 Live

“I like Alex a lot. He knows how many times after a game I’ve gone up to him after he’s played really well and told him ‘Alex, don’t you ever forget how good you could be’.

“That’s a line that came to me in 1957 when I was with Nobby Stiles being signed by Man United and then my dad said football’s not a proper job but Wally who died in the Munich crash that night came to me, put his arms round me, had realised my dad had said football’s not a proper job, said to me ‘I hope you always realise son how good you can be’.

“And I’ve said that to Alex, I’ve mentioned it to his mum, I’ve seen his dad on occasions.

“(I’m a) huge fan of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. This is a terrific blow to Arsenal, but I’m not sure it’s good for Alex himself.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain underwent a medical with Liverpool at England’s St George’s training base last night and had his move confirmed this afternoon.

He’s in the England squad for the games with Malta and Slovakia.

He said: “I’m currently away with England, so I’m at St George’s Park. Firstly, I’m delighted to have signed for Liverpool and a big thank-you to everyone here at the FA that has made this possible, using the facilities. It has been a massive help.

“I’m not going to say too much today; I’m here with England and we’ve got two big games coming up, so I want to focus on them. But I can’t wait to get to Melwood and you’ll hear first from me on LFCTV.”
