Christmas movies: Funniest moments ever
Elf remains a Crimbo classic and this year UK viewers have a an extra treat in store.
Elf: The Musical is on televison on Christmas Day to remind us why we love Buddy so much. But is Will Ferrell’s comedy creation the funnest and funniest seasonal offering ever?

1. Elf – Santa Announcement
Will Ferrell dressed in a bright green Santa’s Helper outfit could have gone terrible wrong but the naive joy of his character Buddy carries the film and warms our cockles.
The North pole elf is lost and alone in New York when he finds a home from home in the Christmas grotto of a department store.
His unfettered, hysterical joy when he is told that Santa is visiting cannot fail to spread a huge smile across your face.
2. Elf – Toy testing
The genius of Will Ferrell’s comedic creation is that he is utterly believable in his a childlike wonder at everything. Even so, even his limits (and poor nerves) are tested in the cute clip of him testing, and being increasingly traumatised, by piles of Jack in the Box toys.
3. Bad Santa
Billy Bob Thornton is great as the misanthropic department store Santa when he asks one poor kid: “What do you want?”
The poor poppet replies: “A fragglestick car,” and teh bvery bad santa echoes parents acoss the land every year when he growls: “What the f*** is that?”
4. Trading Places
Eddie Murphy was at the height of his fame when this classic came out in 1983 but we love this clip where Dan Akroyd’s pretentious commodities broker has a taste of life on the mean streets.
Plus, we’re always happy to see Jamie Lee Curtis flexing her comedic chops as a tart with a heart of gold.
5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – Dinner scene
The third instalment of the riotous Nation Lampoon’s Vacation series sees the hapless Griswold family managing to botch every aspect of their plans for a dream Christmas.
Daddy Griswold is played with grouchy perfection by Chevvy Chase. In this classic scene has has the mother of all Christmas dinner meltdowns.
Bet your dad is starting to look pretty sane right now…
6. The Grinch (or what some Dads become on Christmas Day)
It’s a toss up between Buddy the Elf and The Grinch for our favourite Christmas character and Jim Carey is perfect as the mean-spirited creature.
This brilliant clip not only deals with his wardrobe crisis, it features his utterly grinchsome daily agenda.
“Four o’clock: wallow in self pity. Five o’clock: solve world hunger – tell no-one. Five thirty: Jazzercise.”
Sheer bliss.
7. Home Alone
It’s bad enough heading off on holiday and worrying that you’ve left the oven on, but the first Home Alone film left a generation of parents terrified of forgetting their kids (it happens to the best of us).
Of course, a generation of kids were also treated to a masterclass in highly dangerous – and intoxicatingly tempting – pranks by Macaulay Culkin’s precocious Kevin.
Just pray your kids don’t get any ideas if they’re not happy with their presens this year…
