‘Jeopardy!’s “Most Annoying Contestant Ever” Wins Yet Again, Enters Top 10 For All-Time Winnings

After breaking the record for the lowest score ever earlier this week, another Jeopardy! contestant is making history. Matt Amodio, a grad student from New Haven, Connecticut, won his seventh straight game on the ABC game show last night (July 29), accruing a grand total of $268,800 during his time on the competition.

Though Amodio has been a controversial winner on the show, he’ll still go down in Jeopardy! fame for his grand total so far. That colossal amount brings him to Jeopardy!‘s leaderboard of all-time greats, where he currently sits at ninth place on the all-time regular-season winnings list. On last night’s episode alone, Amodio cashed in a hefty $74,000, and he’ll continue on competing in tonight’s episode. Still, the contestant said the first win was the sweetest of them all.

“Once you [win] once, that’s just such a great accomplishment,” Amodio said in a statement. “Nobody can ever take that away from you.”

Earlier this week, Jeopardy! fans called Amodio out for his bizarre answering technique. When an answer is a person, instead of using “who,” he uses “what.” For example, when an answer was Anna Faris, Amodio responded “what is Faris,” sparking controversy online.

“Is Matt the most annoying contestant ever?” one Twitter user wrote. “Is it so hard to say ‘who is’? or ‘make it a true daily double’?”

Still, some fans have gotten used to him — after all, he’s stuck around for over a week. “Y’all better get used to and get over hearing ‘What’s’ because I think Matt’s going to be on #Jeopardy for a while,” another Twitter user shared. “And I’m here for it.”

Fan-favorite LeVar Burton is guest hosting this week and has already seen it all: as mentioned above, the week began with the record for the lowest score in Jeopardy! history, continuing on with folks tearing into Amodio’s game, and finishing off with this groundbreaking news. The Reading Rainbow star will finish up his gig tonight, with Jeopardy! donating a total of $204,800 to Reading is Fundamental.

Amodio will compete again tonight, vying for his eighth win on the series against Andrew Kleinschmidt from La Jolla, California, and Rachel McMullen of Denton, Texas.

Jeopardy! airs weeknights on ABC at 7/6c.
