Maxine Missick was discovered last Friday by a passing motorcyclist.
Police chiefs in Hat Yai, southern Thailand, believe the former Keele University student “either committed suicide by jumping or she fell accidentally” and have ruled out foul play.
But friends have demanded the authorities carry out further investigations, insisting the 23-year-old was “cheerful” and “full of life”.
Inspector General Sornpet Tantiamonchaikul, from the Hat Yair Police Department, said officers were awaiting results from post-mortem tests before ruling on the official cause of death.
He said: “Police were notified by the rescue foundation about the accident involving the British tourist Maxine Missick. She was staying alone in the room.

“In the room there was no damage or signs of violence.
“There are no suspicions or investigations into foul play or another person being involved.
“A window was open. We believe she either committed suicide by jumping or she fell accidentally.”
Detectives said Maxine was due to fly back to the UK yesterday.
University friend Tom Kayzee said: “The last time I chatted with her was 24th August – she was okay and she loved it there.
“The Maxine that we know of is a lovely and cheerful girl who always smiled. Always adventurous, beautiful soul and well mannered.”
Jennifer Louis said: “I still don’t want to believe it was suicide, even though they have no evidence of foul play.
“An investigation of the situation and room needs to be done.”
And Wan Nadiah Wan Abdullah posted on Facebook that Missick was “so warm, joyful, zesty and so full of life”.
Maxine, originally from the British overseas territories of Turks and Caicos near the Bahamas, moved to the UK and began studying Biomedical Sciences at Keele University, Staffordshire, in 2015.
She wrote on her Linkedin page that she had “lifelong ambitions to commit to the humanitarian missions of MSF (Doctors Without Borders)”.
The 23-year-old had taken an internship in Penang, Malaysia and is believed to have travelled to Hat Yai for a holiday before preparing to return home.
