EFL hits back at Pep Guardiola’s claim that Carabao Cup ball is ‘unacceptable’

EFL officials have invited the Manchester City boss to discuss his concerns over the Mitre Delta ball before the next round.

Guardiola blamed the ball for City’s failure to score for the first time this season.

They went to penalties to beat Wolves.

He said it was “too light and almost impossible to score”.

The EFL said yesterday: “The Mitre ball used in this season’s Carabao Cup is of exactly the same technical specification as the balls used in the Sky Bet EFL and Checkatrade Trophy, all of which are tested in accordance with the FIFA Quality Programme for Footballs and meet the FIFA Quality Pro standard. All balls used in the professional game are required to meet this standard.

“Clearly preference is a subjective matter, but overall the entertainment provided across last night’s fourth-round ties would suggest the ball is not having a negative impact on the competition.

“We will look to engage with Mr Guardiola to fully understand any concerns in advance of their fifth-round tie.”

Tests show that the Mitre ball is the same circumference (27-28in) and the same weight (424g) as the Nike ball used in the Premier League and Adidas ball used in the Champions League.

Mitre said: “All balls feel different and that is why competing teams were sent balls to train with well ahead of the tournament.”

Apart from Manchester City’s goalless game against Wolves, 18 goals were scored in Tuesday’s other five ties. But City players Yaya Toure and Claudio Bravo backed the complaint.

Midfielder Toure said the ball was “rubbish” and “too soft”, while keeper Bravo said: “I don’t think anybody likes it. It’s very light, like a beach volleyball.”

Guardiola’s complaint met with some derision from fellow coaches.

West Brom No2 Gerry Francis said: “That must be the reason why we lost 2-1 to them in the previous round.”

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder said: “If that’s all he has to moan about, good luck to him. Whatever ball we play with, we’ll try to score with it at one end and keep it out at the other.”

Aston Villa keeper Sam Johnstone, on loan from Manchester United, said: “There’s a difference between the Nike and Mitre balls.

“But working with them every day, you get used to them. A ball is a ball.”
