Bedknobs and Broomsticks then and now: What happened to the stars of the Disney hit?

Angela Lansbury – Eglantine Price

Obviously Dame Angela has had an amazing career, and is still winning awards today. Recently she performed a full West End stint in Blythe Spirit and won an Olivier gong for Best Actress In A Supporting Role. She also won a Tony in 2009, and scooped an honorary Oscar in 2013.

David Tomlinson – Professor Emelius Browne

Seven years after his role in Mary Poppins, David joined another Disney smash, but it proved to be one of his last big screen roles. He retired from acting in 1980 to spend more time with his family, and passed away in 2000.

Cindy O’Callaghan – Carrie Rawlins

Roy Snart – Paul Rawlins

Roy, just a young toddler when Bedknobs was released in the early 70s, is now a high-flying entrepreneur, and is believed to be the head of First Choice Software, an IT company. According to his rather impressive LinkedIn page, he’s been in his current position for around 20 years, becoming quite the impressive entrepreneur.

Ian Weighill – Charlie Rawlins

If you can find any trace of former child star Ian now, you’re in good stead for a job with MI5. The pre-teen actor, who played the eldest of the three kids in the film, decided against pursuing a film career, and is now widely thought to be a train driver for South West Trains.

Sam Jaffe – The Bookman

Sam passed away at the age of 93, back in 1984. In the years between Bedknobs and Broomsticks and his passing, he had numerous TV roles including Kojak, The Bionic Woman and S.W.A.T., plus film parts in Battle Beyond The Stars and Nothing Lasts Forever.

Roddy McDowall – Mr Rowan Jelk

Roddy was a hugely popular screen actor, who passed away in 1998 at the age of 70. He had previously become a household name for his role in How Green Was My Valley (1941) so was a fully-established star when Bedknobs came along. He also starred in several Planet of the Apes films, That Darn Cat!, Agatha Christie’s Evil Under The Sun, Funny Lady, Fright Night and Overboard. He also appeared frequently on Hollywood Squares.

Bruce Forsyth – Swinburne

In his early forties at the time of the film’s release Brucie was then best known for The Bruce Forsyth Show, and was just starting on The Generation Game. From there, he continued to be one of the nation’s favourite entertainers; fronting Play Your Cards Right, The Price Is Right, and Strictly Come Dancing. He passed away in August 2017.
