Star Wars 8: Director Rian Johnson just dropped a big bombshell about The Last Jedi

The film-maker, who also wrote the upcoming blockbuster, spoke out on social media about the use of wipe transitions, which each movie in the series has deployed.

Rather than straightforward cutting between scenes, Star Wars films have become known for wipe-fade effects – but it seems Episode 8 will rely on them less than any previous movie.

Johnson teased the nugget of info by running a poll on Twitter, asking: “Just off the top of your head, which movie would you guess has the most wipe transitions?”

He later said: “The most wipe transitions in a SW movie was Ep 1, with 55.

“To my eternal shame, The Last Jedi is bringing up the rear with a measly 12.”

That, believe it or not, is one of the very few official morsels of information that Star Wars HQ have given away over recent weeks.

D23 in mid-July was the last time fans got some concrete detail, courtesy of a behind-the-scenes clip.

The wait for an official trailer, following April’s teaser, is proving to be a long one – with some now predicting that October will be when a ‘proper’ promo will be unveiled.

The Last Jedi is expected to focus heavily on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Rey (Daisy Ridley), after the cliffhanger ending of Episode 7.

It’ll also be the last appearance from Carrie Fisher as General Leia, following her sad death late last year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on December 14.
