German Catholic Leader Urges Continued Openness in Papacy
Irme Stetter-Karp, president of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), communicated to a news agency her belief that the Catholic Church requires a pontiff capable of addressing the contemporary needs of the 21st century. She warned that choosing a conservative successor to Pope Francis could present significant hurdles for the Catholic Church in Germany.
Concerns over Conservative Shift
Stetter-Karp acknowledged the presence of influential groups within the Church who are keen to maintain established clerical authority. These factions, she noted, perceive increased autonomy for lay Catholics as a threat to the Church’s unity.
“This risk is tangible, and it should not be underestimated,” Stetter-Karp stated.

The ZdK, representing the Catholic laity within German parishes, has been at the forefront of reform efforts. In collaboration with the German Bishops’ Conference, the ZdK launched the Synodal Path in 2019, a reform process designed to address key issues within the Church.

German Catholics Favor Liberalizing Reforms
Numerous surveys have indicated that a majority of German Catholics are in favor of liberalizing reforms within the Church. These include calls for greater rights for women and a revised approach to the Church’s teachings on sexual morality.
