SPRINGFIELD, MO – The Missouri State University community is grieving the death of football player Todric McGee. The university safety passed away early Saturday morning from what authorities are investigating as a possible unintentional, self-inflicted gunshot wound. McGee was 21 years old. The Springfield Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Police Investigate McGee’s Death

According to Springfield Police Department spokesperson Cris Swaters, officers were dispatched to McGee’s residence Friday morning to perform a wellness check.

“He was transported to a local medical facility with critical injuries and subsequently succumbed to those injuries,” Swaters stated in an email communication. “This remains an active inquiry.”

University Confirms Tragedy

Missouri State University officially announced the news of McGee’s passing on Saturday, confirming that he died early that morning due to injuries sustained at his home on Friday.

McGee’s Impact on Bears Football

McGee was a significant member of the Bears football program, preparing to enter his fifth season. He held the starting safety position for both the 2023 and 2024 seasons and received all-conference accolades in 2023 for his performance on the field.
