Darryl Hannah Alleges Trump Administration Sabotaged Neil Young’s Citizenship Application
Actress Darryl Hannah asserted that the Trump administration employed tactics to “mess up” her Canadian-born husband, legendary musician Neil Young, during his application for United States citizenship, according to a recent interview. The “Splash” star detailed the Neil Young citizenship ordeal, claiming the previous administration created bureaucratic hurdles for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
Bureaucratic Roadblocks for Rock Legend
Hannah disclosed to the BBC that Young, who now holds dual Canadian-American citizenship, encountered a protracted bureaucratic process under the Trump administration while endeavoring to obtain an American passport.
“They utilized every trick imaginable to disrupt him, forcing him to return repeatedly for additional interviews,” the 64-year-old “Blade Runner” actress stated. “It’s absurd given that he has resided in America and paid taxes here since his twenties.”
Hannah Criticizes Trump-Era Immigration Policies
Referencing broader immigration policies of the prior administration, Hannah commented, “They have been detaining individuals with green cards or visas—which is abhorrent and appalling—but they have not, thus far, refused reentry to American citizens. I don’t anticipate that occurring,” the “Wall Street” actress expressed in the interview, discussing current Trump-era policies.
Young’s Political Activism and Criticism of Trump
Neil Young has been a vocal detractor of the former president, even initiating legal action against Trump in 2020 in an attempt to prevent the then-campaigner-in-chief from using his 1991 anthem “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” at political rallies.
Although Young later withdrew the lawsuit, his critical stance against the Trump administration has persisted.
“If I mention Donald J Trump, I might become one of those returning to America who is denied entry or imprisoned to sleep on a concrete floor with a foil blanket,” the 79-year-old “Heart of Gold” singer reportedly wrote on his website, as reported by the BBC.
Controversy with Spotify and Joe Rogan
The former member of “Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young” has also engaged in public disputes with Spotify. He urged employees of the music streaming service to leave “before it devours your soul” due to the platforming of Joe Rogan’s podcast, which has faced criticism for spreading misinformation.
Young removed his musical catalog from Spotify in 2022 in protest but subsequently reinstated his tracks on the platform in 2024.
Glastonbury Festival Headline
Currently, Neil Young is scheduled to headline the Glastonbury music festival in June, reversing a previous announcement of a boycott of the event.
“Due to an inaccuracy in the information I received, I had decided against performing at the Glastonbury Festival, which I have always cherished,” Young reportedly stated on his website, according to the BBC.
