Young Knicks Fan Cheers on Namesake Team in NBA Playoffs
Seven-year-old Knicks Chesterson, a devoted supporter of the New York Knicks, will be enthusiastically watching her favorite basketball team compete in the Eastern Conference playoffs, provided the games conclude before her 7:30 PM bedtime.
A Passion for the Knicks
“I believe the Knicks are going to secure five victories against the Pistons and the Celtics, and… Daddy didn’t tell me the rest,” stated the young superfan. Her father, a lifelong Knicks devotee, named her in honor of his cherished team.
“I want them to win the championship title because I don’t think any other team is better than the Knicks,” she confidently asserted.
The Origin of the Name
Corin, her father, recounted the genesis of the idea to name his daughter after his beloved basketball team. The notion struck him when his wife, Molly, was expecting.
“During Molly’s pregnancy, she would explore rosters of past and present Knicks players, suggesting different names daily, but none truly resonated,” explained the 36-year-old New Rochelle native.

“Then one day, I proposed to her, ‘What about simply ‘Knicks’?’”
“To my delight, she didn’t object, which was fantastic.”
Family Reactions
When the couple shared their chosen name with family members, they were initially skeptical. “At first, they didn’t believe us,” Corin recalled. He had previously worked part-time for the Knicks organization until a decade prior.
“I was making them guess the name… and when I finally said, ‘Knicks,’ my sister’s expression was priceless.”
Commercial Fame and Fan Recognition
The father-daughter duo gained a degree of notoriety within the basketball community after starring in a commercial for MSG Network. This advertisement, part of the network’s Emmy Award-winning “Expression of Fandom” campaign, is scheduled to air again during the playoffs. The Knicks are set to tip off against the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden, with the playoff series commencing Saturday at 6 PM.
Due to their television appearance, fans frequently recognize the pair in public.
Middle Name Inspiration
“We were at her first-grade basketball game when another father approached me, recognizing us from the commercial. He mentioned that they had recently welcomed a newborn daughter and had actually chosen ‘Knicks’ as her middle name,” Corin recounted.
“They spelled it differently, as ‘Nix’, I believe.”
Knicks’ Basketball Prowess
Knicks, who plays as a guard on her elementary school basketball team coached by Corin, attended her inaugural Knickerbockers game in March 2021. It was a memorable experience as the Knicks triumphed over the Bucks with a score of 102-96.
“It was enjoyable because the Knicks were victorious,” she remarked.
Basketball-Themed Family Names
Knicks is the eldest of four sisters, and all her siblings also possess basketball-inspired names.
“However, they are not named after teams, but rather after individual players,” Knicks clarified. “I appreciate it because all their names are very nice.”
Sister’s Names Revealed
Her sisters are: Scottie, age 5, named after Chicago Bulls icon Scottie Pippen; Coby, age 3, in homage to the late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant; and Noa, age 1, named after Joakim Noah, who played for both the Knicks and the Bulls.
Corin, who recently relocated his family back to New York after living in Chicago, elaborated on the significance of each name.
“Scottie was born while we were living in Chicago. Coby’s birth, unfortunately, occurred after Kobe Bryant’s untimely passing. And Joakim Noah, of course, has a connection to both New York and Chicago having played for both the Knicks and the Bulls.”
A Slam Dunk Name
Knicks, whose preferred players include Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges, identified multiple benefits to having her unique name.
“It’s distinctive,” she stated. “And I get to wear apparel with my own name on it.”
