Senator Van Hollen Visits El Salvador to Meet Deported Migrant Alleged to Have MS-13 Ties

In a move highlighting the ongoing debate over immigration and deportation policies, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, traveled to El Salvador and met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal migrant who was deported and is alleged to be a member of the MS-13 gang. The senator sought to secure Abrego Garcia’s release and facilitated a face-to-face meeting despite the controversy surrounding the case.

Meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Senator Van Hollen’s visit to El Salvador culminated in a Thursday meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Abrego Garcia was deported by the Trump administration in March, even though an immigration court order was in place to prevent his deportation.

Van Hollen publicized the meeting on social media platform X, including a photograph. He stated he also contacted Abrego Garcia’s wife to convey a message of affection.

The senator did not provide immediate details regarding Abrego Garcia’s current situation. Abrego Garcia’s legal team is actively working to compel the Trump administration to enable his return to the United States.

Trump Administration Responds

A spokesperson for the Trump administration issued a response, asserting that Senator Van Hollen was prioritizing the welfare of a potentially dangerous illegal migrant over his own constituents.

Kush Desai, representing the Trump administration, remarked to DailyMail.com, “Chris Van Hollen has unequivocally positioned Democrats as the party focused on the well-being of an illegal alien MS-13 terrorist. This is truly reprehensible. President Trump will continue to champion law-abiding Americans.”

President Bukele’s Reaction

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele posted images of the meeting shortly before Senator Van Hollen shared his own post. Bukele adopted a combative stance, dismissing concerns about Abrego Garcia’s well-being in El Salvador.

Bukele’s post sarcastically stated: “Kilmar Abrego Garcia, miraculously resurrected from the alleged ‘death camps’ and ‘torture,’ now enjoying margaritas with Sen. Van Hollen in the tropical paradise of El Salvador!”

Denied Prison Entry and Subsequent Meeting

The meeting occurred after Senator Van Hollen reported being denied entry to a high-security prison in El Salvador on Thursday. He had attempted to assess Abrego Garcia’s condition and advocate for his release.

During a press conference in San Salvador, the Democratic senator explained that soldiers at a checkpoint approximately two miles from the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) stopped his vehicle, while allowing other vehicles to pass.

“They halted us due to explicit orders preventing our passage,” Van Hollen stated.

Background on Abrego Garcia’s Case

Kilmar Abrego Garcia initially entered the U.S. without authorization in 2011. In 2019, a judge blocked his deportation to El Salvador citing threats from gang members, but allowed for deportation to another location.

This week, the Trump administration acknowledged in court filings that Abrego Garcia’s deportation to El Salvador was an error. The Supreme Court has since mandated the Trump administration to facilitate his return to the U.S.

Late Thursday, a panel of three judges from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected a motion to suspend a judge’s ruling. The ruling requires Trump administration officials to provide sworn testimony to ascertain their compliance with the court’s directive to enable Abrego Garcia’s return.

The court issued a strong rebuke, stating the Trump administration’s claims of inability to free Garcia or return him to the U.S. “should be shocking to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans…still hold dear.” This highlights the escalating conflict between the executive and judicial branches of government.

Judicial Criticism of Administration’s Stance

Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III, a Republican appointee by President Ronald Reagan, commented, “It is often difficult…to get to the heart of the matter. But in this case, it is straightforward.”

He expressed hope that the Executive Branch recognizes “the rule of law as vital to the American ethos.”

Trump administration officials maintain that Garcia is not an innocent individual, asserting he is an MS-13 gang member who should be in El Salvador.

Domestic Violence Allegations

Furthermore, a 2021 petition for protection from domestic violence, filed by Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez, and obtained by DailyMail.com, alleges that Abrego Garcia physically assaulted his wife on multiple occasions.

However, Ms. Vasquez told The Post that she was “acting out of caution after a disagreement with Kilmar… in case things escalated” due to past abuse in a prior relationship.

“Things did not escalate, and I decided not to pursue the civil court process. We resolved the situation privately as a family, including seeking counseling,” she added.

“Our marriage has only strengthened in the years since. No one is perfect, and no marriage is perfect.”

Democrats’ Outcry and Republican Criticism

Democrats have expressed outrage over Abrego Garcia’s deportation. Senator Chris Van Hollen’s trip underscores their efforts to address the situation.

Republicans and conservative figures have criticized Senator Van Hollen’s actions. They argue he is prioritizing a potentially dangerous individual over the safety of American citizens. Critics include the mother of a woman murdered by someone who entered the U.S. illegally.

Regarding Senator Van Hollen’s efforts, the Department of Homeland Security stated on social media platform X: “We hear far too much about the gang members and criminals’ sob stories and not enough about their victims.”

Patty Morin, the mother of Rachel Morin, who was murdered, voiced her anger on Fox News, criticizing the lack of communication from state officials following her daughter’s murder. Addressing Sean Hannity, she conveyed her distress and lack of support from Democratic officials.

Case Background and Current Status

Rachel Morin’s killer, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant, was recently found guilty of murder, rape, and kidnapping and is awaiting sentencing.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, identified as a legal resident, arrived at the CECOT prison in El Salvador on March 15. He initially entered the U.S. in 2011 and was later granted permission to remain by a judge in 2019. He established residence in Maryland, married an American citizen, and has a son.

The Trump administration proceeded with Abrego Garcia’s deportation on March 15, citing alleged MS-13 connections.

His wife and legal counsel dispute his gang affiliation and have initiated legal action against the administration for his removal.

Initially, the Trump administration characterized his removal as an error. Subsequently, the Supreme Court mandated the facilitation of his return.

However, the Trump administration remains firm in its stance.

Trump and Bukele Defend Deportation

During a meeting in the Oval Office, President Trump and President Bukele jointly defended their actions regarding Abrego Garcia’s case.

President Bukele questioned the feasibility of returning Abrego Garcia to the U.S. “How can I return him to the United States? I smuggle him into the United States or what do I do? Of course, I’m not going to do it,” he stated.

“The question is preposterous. How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States? I don’t have the power to return him to the United States.”

President Trump supported Bukele’s position and further encouraged El Salvador to accept more migrants and construct additional prisons.

“I just asked the president…this massive complex that he built, a jail complex. I said, ‘Can you build some more of them, please?'” Trump recounted.
