British Soccer Community Mourns Passing of Joe Thompson After Cancer Battle

The soccer world is in mourning following the death of former British footballer Joe Thompson, who passed away at the age of 36 after a courageous fight with cancer. Known for his time as a midfielder with Rochdale AFC, Thompson’s passing marks the end of a long and arduous health struggle, touching fans and fellow athletes alike.

Family’s Heartfelt Announcement

Chantelle Thompson, Joe’s wife, shared the news of his death via Instagram on Friday, April 18, expressing profound grief. “The words I thought I would never have to write… Our brave and courageous Joey passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning,” she wrote. “He was at home, in a beautiful, peaceful setting, surrounded by his family when he transitioned.”

A Relentless Fight

Thompson’s cancer journey included multiple diagnoses. He was initially diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma in April 2024. Tragically, this was not his first encounter with the disease, having previously battled cancer in both 2013 and 2017.

Legacy of Strength and Impact

In her moving tribute, Chantelle highlighted the significant impact Joe had on numerous lives. “Joe has made such an impact on so many people and we are all forever grateful for him blessing us with his presence and for being so strong and staying with us as long as he did against all the odds,” his wife stated. She emphasized his role as an “incredible husband, son, brother, friend and father” to their daughters, who “will now carry his light and legacy on.”

Unwavering Spirit

Chantelle’s reflections underscored Joe’s persistent determination throughout his illness. She described his “long battle” with cancer as one he “fought with all his might,” always doing things “HIS way.” She added, “He chose his path and walked every step with courage and pride, growing closer and closer to God each day whilst still being there for so many others.” Despite his health challenges, he remained hopeful, “He held on to his plans for the future to continue that legacy, but it’s now time for him to rest up and watch over us from heaven.”

In a testament to Joe’s desire to connect with those he touched, Chantelle announced, “Joe wanted an open funeral so everyone who feels that Joe in any way made an impact on their life’s and wishes to attend can do so. Once we know more around dates etc, we will be sharing that on his socials.”

Gratitude and Family Support

Concluding her statement, Chantelle conveyed gratitude for the support received during Joe’s illness. “Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey with us. We are all forever grateful.”

Family as Inspiration

Prior to his death, Joe Thompson had openly discussed his health challenges, consistently acknowledging the strength he drew from Chantelle and their daughters, Thailula and Athena Rae. In an April 2024 interview with broadcaster Zarah Connolly, following his latest diagnosis, Joe stated, “They are everything. They are why I wake up… I often say the one that is there next to you is probably the one that is suffering the most because they are seeing you. They are witnessing you go through certain things.”
