Rare Sighting of Juvenile Colossal Squid Captured in Deep Sea
For the first time, a juvenile colossal squid has been observed in its natural deep-sea environment, a century after the species was first identified. This unprecedented glimpse of the elusive creature was captured on video in the South Atlantic Ocean, marking a significant moment in marine biology and offering new insights into these enigmatic giants.
Unveiling the Deep-Sea Mystery
Researchers aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel, Falkor (too), deployed the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian, which successfully filmed the young colossal squid on March 9th. The encounter occurred near the South Sandwich Islands, approximately 430 miles southeast of South Georgia.
This rare sighting is particularly noteworthy as it provides the first-ever footage of a juvenile colossal squid in its native habitat. Previous knowledge of these creatures was primarily derived from specimens found in the stomachs of sperm whales or those occasionally caught in fishing nets.

Distinctive Features Observed
Scientists noted key characteristics, including two curved hooks located on the tentacle clubs – specialized structures at the ends of the longer tentacles. Furthermore, hooks were also present on the midsection of its eight arms, a defining trait of colossal squids.
Its transparent nature is typical of young squids, often resembling glass squids. This translucency is expected to diminish as the squid matures and grows.
Size and Habitat
Filmed at a depth of 1,968 feet, the juvenile squid measured nearly a foot in length. Adult colossal squids are known to reach impressive sizes, growing up to an estimated seven feet long and weighing as much as 1,110 pounds, solidifying their status as the largest invertebrate on Earth by mass.
