US and Somalia Launch Joint Airstrike Against Islamist Militants in Strategic Town
In a collaborative effort, the United States and Somalia have executed an airstrike targeting Islamist militants battling for control of Adan Yabaal, a strategically important town in central Somalia, according to government sources. The operation follows an assault on the town by al-Shabab fighters, underscoring the ongoing conflict in the region.
Counter-Terrorism Operation in Adan Yabaal
The Somali government confirmed that a “precisely coordinated” airstrike was carried out in Adan Yabaal, situated north of Mogadishu, the nation’s capital. This action transpired hours after al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, launched a raid on the town, which serves as a crucial staging ground for military actions.
Senior Militants Among Casualties
According to a statement released by the Somali information ministry on social media platform X, the airstrike resulted in the deaths of 12 militants. The ministry further indicated that several high-ranking commanders within al-Shabab were among those neutralized in the operation.
Concerns Over Militant Resurgence
This recent combat occurs amidst escalating anxieties regarding a potential resurgence of jihadist activity in Somalia. A rise in militant offensives, including a recent attack targeting the convoy of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last month, has amplified these concerns.
Al-Shabab’s Protracted Insurgency
For nearly two decades, al-Shabab has waged war against the Somali government, aiming to depose the current administration and institute a strict Islamist state. The group presently maintains control over significant swathes of southern and central Somalia.

While an African Union-led peacekeeping mission contributed to pushing back the jihadists in 2022 and 2023, al-Shabab remains a formidable threat, demonstrating resilience despite sustained military campaigns against them.
Government Asserts Weakening of Militant Group
Despite ongoing challenges, the Somali government maintains its position that al-Shabab has been significantly weakened by persistent counter-terrorism efforts.
Details of the Airstrike
The information ministry detailed that the airstrike, executed late Wednesday by Somali armed forces in conjunction with the US Africa Command (Africom), was “intended to neutralize the threat” posed by the militants in the region.
The government statement further clarified that “the targeted strike successfully hit a location utilized by the militants as a meeting point and sanctuary.” Crucially, it emphasized that “there were no civilian casualties” resulting from the operation.
Adan Yabaal: A Town of Strategic Importance
Adan Yabaal, situated in the Middle Shabelle region, has been a focal point of conflict. Al-Shabab initially seized the town in 2016 before government forces reclaimed it in 2022, highlighting its contested nature and strategic value.
Intense clashes erupted early Wednesday when al-Shabab fighters launched a raid on the town, employing heavy explosives in their assault.
Subsequently, al-Shabab asserted that they had retaken control of Adan Yabaal. Two local residents corroborated this claim to AFP news agency, indicating that militants had indeed gained control of the town.
However, the Somali government has not issued an official statement confirming which entity presently holds control of Adan Yabaal.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Adan Yabaal last month, where he engaged with military commanders, underscored the town’s critical strategic importance in the ongoing campaign against militants.
Separate Military Action Near Baidoa
In a separate development, the national army reported eliminating at least 35 fighters near the city of Baidoa on Thursday. According to the ministry, this occurred after the fighters attempted to launch an attack on a military base in the vicinity.
President Downplays Militant Advances
President Mohamud has minimized the significance of recent al-Shabab advances, characterizing occasional battlefield setbacks as unavoidable in the broader context of the conflict. He reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to ultimately defeating the militants.
