Details Surface in Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa Death Investigation

New information has come to light regarding the deaths of acclaimed Hollywood actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Santa Fe authorities have released scene photographs and body camera video capturing the discovery of their bodies at their New Mexico residence. A disturbing finding within the couple’s bed has intensified inquiries surrounding their passing in February 2025.

Discovery at the Scene

On Wednesday, April 16, law enforcement made public footage from the Hackman residence. This included visual evidence of a disturbing discovery within the disarrayed bedding of an unmade bed. Investigators identified minor bloodstains and a soiled adhesive bandage. The origin of the blood and the cause of the bleeding are currently undetermined.

Betsy Arakawa’s Pre-Death Online Searches and Symptoms

In the days leading up to her death, Betsy Arakawa conducted online searches related to her health. These searches included:

  • “Flu and nosebleeds”
  • “Can Covid cause dizziness?”

She also placed an order on Amazon for oxygen canisters, described as being for “respiratory support.” Furthermore, emails indicated she had cancelled a massage appointment, explaining that Gene Hackman had presented with “flu/cold-like symptoms” but had tested negative for Covid-19.

Official Cause of Death

Betsy Arakawa’s official cause of death was determined to be hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. This is a disease transmitted by rodents and potentially linked to rodent infestations in outbuildings on the couple’s property. It is believed she died on February 12. Gene Hackman’s estimated time of death is February 18, based on the last recorded activity from his pacemaker.

Gene Hackman’s Health and Passing

The celebrated actor’s cause of death was attributed to heart disease, further complicated by advanced Alzheimer’s disease. It is speculated that the progression of Alzheimer’s may have prevented him from recognizing his wife’s death or seeking assistance.

Family’s Attempt to Restrict Information Release

The Hackman family sought to prevent the release of documents and photographs from the scene. However, Santa Fe County Manager Gregory S Shaffer explained that the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) presented a legal obligation for disclosure. Shaffer stated that while the county respected the family’s privacy during this difficult period, the law mandated the release of records, and withholding them could have resulted in legal action, financial penalties, and legal fees.
