Study Highlights Environmental Advantages of Organic Cotton Cultivation

A recent study, conducted in collaboration with over 100,000 Indian farmers and facilitated by climate solutions provider South Pole, reveals the environmental benefits of organic cotton cultivation. The research, commissioned by the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA), delves into the environmental impact of cotton farming across diverse irrigation methods and regions in India. This analysis offers crucial insights for the sustainable cotton industry and brands seeking to reduce their ecological footprint.

Comprehensive Analysis of Cotton Farming Practices

The analysis utilizes validated data from over 18,000 farmers across three growing seasons, spanning from 2020 to 2023. It examines various irrigation scenarios, including rain-fed, intensive irrigation, and combined approaches. This extensive dataset allows for a nuanced understanding of the environmental performance of organic cotton under different agricultural conditions.

Research Objectives and Scope

The core objective of this research is to establish environmental profiles for raw cotton originating from seed cotton cultivated by participants in OCA’s agricultural program in India. The study investigates variations in irrigation and farming techniques, which lead to distinct environmental profiles across 15 specific supply regions within India over three separate growth cycles. The geographical scope encompasses five Indian states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, and Telangana.

Key Insights from OCA and South Pole

Bart Vollaard, executive director of OCA, stated, “OCA’s initial regional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) not only delivers unique localized understanding of the environmental advantages of organic cotton for our industry, but it also assists us in determining how to amplify the impact of our initiatives and refine OCA’s data systems. This refinement ensures we can provide increasingly precise LCAs in the future, demonstrating the constructive influence of the remarkable efforts of the farmers in our program.”

Goals of the Life Cycle Assessment

The OCA’s LCA was designed to create a dependable benchmark for cradle-to-ginning-gate assessments, support verifiable environmental claims, and assist associated brands with Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting. Furthermore, the OCA aimed to enhance its data collection and management procedures for upcoming evaluations and monitoring activities.

Findings: Reduced Environmental Footprint of Organic Cotton

The study’s outcomes indicate that organic cotton farming has a smaller environmental footprint across several critical impact categories. These include climate change potential, water consumption, acidification, and eutrophication. Specifically, the research highlights:

  • Emissions from Fields: Direct emissions from fields are significant contributors to climate change effects, acidification, and eutrophication. These emissions constitute a substantial portion, ranging from 45% to 99% (averaging 88%), of the impact across the majority of categories (ten out of sixteen) within the Control – Irrigated group.
  • Fertiliser Use: The application of fertilisers, both synthetic and natural, is a key determinant in the environmental impact associated with cotton production.
  • Irrigation Practices and Water Use: Water use impacts are significantly influenced by irrigation methods. Rain-fed systems demonstrate the minimal environmental impact related to water usage.

Expert Perspective on Study Significance

Caroline Peyer, environmental impact accounting LCA lead at South Pole, commented, “South Pole is pleased to collaborate with OCA on this groundbreaking study featuring an extensive, farm-level dataset. This dataset offers valuable perspectives on the environmental effects of diverse farming systems, emphasizing the benefits of organic cotton cultivation. The substantial sample size, coupled with third-party validation, strengthens the robustness and dependability of the results – representing a progressive step in enabling businesses to formulate effective sourcing strategies.”

Recommendations for Sustainable Cotton Production

To decrease the environmental footprint of cotton production, the study suggests a combination of strategies. Promoting organic cotton cultivation is essential due to its reduced reliance on synthetic inputs and its consistency with sustainable farming methodologies.

Additionally, the research emphasizes that adopting less impactful irrigation technologies and improving fertiliser management can significantly diminish the environmental impact of cotton farming. Enhancing energy efficiency on farms also contributes to lowering resource consumption and GHG emissions.

Enhancing Data Quality and Future Assessments

The study emphasizes the importance of improving LCA data quality and consistency for sustainability initiatives to be effective and quantifiable. This involves refining secondary data for irrigation through collaborations with local organizations to enhance water footprint assessments. Regular updates to LCA studies are crucial for monitoring progress and evaluating the impacts of interventions over time.

OCA’s Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability

OCA is planning further regional LCAs to more precisely evaluate organic cotton’s contribution to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and social challenges. Brands partnering with OCA gain access to customized LCA insight dashboards. These dashboards empower them to track advancement, guide sourcing choices, and generate meaningful outcomes.

Call for Industry Collaboration

The regional LCA highlights the necessity for collaborative actions within the industry to expand sustainability measures.

OCA also encourages textile brands, NGOs, policymakers, and suppliers to utilize these conclusions in promoting sustainable practices and policies.

Recognition of Sustainable Initiatives

Recently, OCA recognized Soorty’s Soorty Organic Cotton Initiative (SOCI), acknowledging it as the first private-sector textile manufacturer initiative in Pakistan.
