Huge 23ft colossal squid as big as a car pictured for first time

Importance Score: 45 / 100 🔵

In an unprecedented scientific observation, a colossal squid, an enormous invertebrate with a weight comparable to that of a car, has been filmed in its deep-sea habitat for the very first time. Experts estimate that these enigmatic creatures can attain a length of up to 7 meters (23 feet) at full maturity, roughly equivalent to the height of a two-story building. This groundbreaking footage offers a rare glimpse into the life of this elusive species.

Colossal Squid Documented in Natural Environment

According to expert projections, the colossal squid (*Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni*) may be the heaviest invertebrate on Earth, potentially reaching weights of up to 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds), similar to a small automobile. The remarkable video captured a juvenile squid, measuring a mere 30 centimeters in length, at a depth of 600 meters (1,968 feet) near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. Dr. Kat Bolstad, an expert who validated the footage, noted that previous sightings were primarily limited to remnants discovered inside predators such as whales or seabirds.

First Ever In Situ Footage of Juvenile Colossal Squid

Dr. Bolstad conveyed her enthusiasm about witnessing the inaugural in situ recording of a young colossal squid, emphasizing the unique opportunity to observe the animal undisturbed in its native environment. She also remarked on the humbling aspect of realizing these creatures are entirely unaware of human presence.

Research Expedition in the South Atlantic

The pioneering footage was obtained by the crew of the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor (too). They employed a remotely operated vehicle, named SuBastian, to film the deep-sea creature. Specialists from the University of Plymouth and the British Antarctic Survey collaborated on this significant research expedition.

Significance of the Deep-Sea Discovery

While the first confirmed sighting of a mature adult male colossal squid occurred in 2007 near New Zealand involving a fishing vessel, this recent recording represents the first instance of capturing the species in its natural, deep-ocean setting. This visual evidence is invaluable for understanding these elusive animals.

Unveiling the Mysterious Colossal Squid

Scientifically recognized as *Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni*, this intriguing and cryptic animal possesses hooks located on the midsection of its eight arms. Currently, limited knowledge exists concerning their complete lifecycle. However, it is known that adult colossal squid eventually lose the translucent quality observed in juveniles, gaining a more opaque appearance as they mature.
