Amy Poehler’s Surprise Podcast Appearance Stuns Will Arnett
In a surprising turn of events, Amy Poehler made a guest appearance on ex-husband Will Arnett‘s podcast “Smartless,” creating an unexpected on-air reunion. The comedic actress joined Arnett and his co-hosts, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, for an engaging conversation that left Arnett genuinely astonished.
Unforeseen Guest on “Smartless” Podcast
As loyal listeners of the “Smartless” podcast are aware, Arnett, Bateman, and Hayes each take turns selecting podcast guests, keeping their co-hosts uninformed about the chosen individual. For the episode broadcast on Monday, April 21, Hayes introduced Poehler by enumerating her extensive accomplishments and credentials – an introduction that still managed to completely surprise Arnett.
“No way!” Arnett exclaimed in disbelief when Poehler was revealed as the guest. Poehler playfully responded, remarking on Arnett’s lack of recognition, “Not a glimpse of recognition on Will’s face when [Sean] said all of those things.”
Poehler’s Son Predicted Podcast Reunion
While Arnett was completely unaware of Poehler’s forthcoming appearance, the star of Parks and Recreation disclosed that their younger son had actually anticipated it. (Arnett and Poehler are parents to sons Archie and Abel, born in 2008 and 2010, respectively.)
“Our youngest observed my schedule on the kitchen table and questioned, ‘You’re doing ‘Smartless?’ Does Dad know?’ And I replied, ‘No, don’t mention it,’” Poehler recounted. Arnett then added, “And furthermore, Amy and I were exchanging texts last night regarding a different matter entirely. Zero [indication].”

Podcast Banter: Jokes and Reflections
Poehler Teases Cohosts About “Weird” Podcast Appearance
Arnett asserted that he had previously requested Poehler to be a guest on “Smartless,” including for their live tour – offers she had previously declined.
“Well, I wanted to wait until you had produced 250 episodes to assess the legitimacy of this venture,” Poehler joked. “I typically allow a five-year period before committing to something.”
The discussion surrounding Poehler’s presence led Bateman to question Hayes about whether he had attempted to discreetly suggest the idea of inviting her onto the podcast to Arnett beforehand.
“What are you guys discussing? Why is it necessary to seek approval for anything? Hosts, a warm welcome, by the way. Good to see you all,” Poehler quipped. “I mean seriously, you’re all commenting on how unusual it is that I’m here. Hello, I am your guest. Pleased to be here.”
Before commencing the formal interview, Hayes provided the audience – and his sister, Tracey – with a concise overview of Arnett and Poehler’s past relationship.
“You two were spouses, and now you are not, and it has been many years, and everything is proceeding smoothly,” Hayes summarized, eliciting laughter from everyone present.
Bateman, adopting a humorous approach, playfully inquired about Arnett and Poehler’s first meeting, before adding lightheartedly, “We will delve into it. When did the relationship initially begin to deteriorate?”
Arnett Reminisces About Poehler’s Father’s Public Pride
While reminiscing about a visit to Poehler’s hometown in Massachusetts, Arnett recounted instances where her father would proudly inform strangers about the Saturday Night Live alumna’s professional accomplishments.
“There was a young woman, approximately 17 years old, working part-time at an ice cream parlor. This was during Amy’s initial period on SNL, around 25 years ago. He approaches the girl, who is rather quiet, as she scoops ice cream and asks, ‘Do you enjoy your job?’ She replies, ‘Yes, I suppose so.’ He then states, ‘You know who truly loves her job? My daughter,’” Arnett narrated. “It was truly remarkable. He is immensely proud.”
Poehler confirmed that her father’s enthusiasm regarding her profession has persisted over time.
“He will engage with people in elevators and ask, ‘Do you enjoy television and movies?’ That is his standard question. As if anyone would respond negatively?” Poehler remarked, to which Arnett added, “Years ago, we played golf with some individuals; Bill and I were paired with some random men. He returns to the car, looks at me, and says, ‘Well, I informed them.’”
Arnett Praises Poehler’s Parenting Abilities
Arnett expressed considerable admiration for Poehler’s skills as a parent, explaining that he endeavors to emulate her approach when it comes to raising their shared sons.
“I have to exert significant effort—Amy, you excel at this, and you assist me in this collaboratively—to remember to actively listen to their expressions and to resist imposing my preconceived notions, ‘You require this, you need that,’” Arnett explained. “To genuinely sit and pay attention to what your child is attempting to convey. Encourage them to articulate themselves to the best of their abilities. This doesn’t come naturally to me because that was not my upbringing.”
Arnett Recalls Initial Encounter with Poehler in 1996
Although Arnett and Poehler’s romantic involvement began in 2000, their initial meeting occurred four years prior when she was performing with an improvisational comedy troupe. In recounting her past with the Upright Citizens Brigade, Poehler mentioned her relocation to New York City with the group.
“Will, I wish to avoid any discomfort, but I was in a relationship with Matt Besser at that time,” Poehler stated, to which Arnett jokingly retorted, “I knew it!”
Arnett elaborated that he attended the group’s performance in New York City at the suggestion of his agent – who also happened to be Poehler’s initial agent.
“Amy, I was dating Missy [Yager] at that moment, I am unsure if I had disclosed that to you,” Arnett quipped, and Poehler affirmed her awareness. “We observe the performance. We are completely captivated; we go for drinks afterward and discuss it. We continue to discuss it for several days because nobody was executing what they were doing. And we thought, ‘This was exceptionally humorous, remarkably inventive, and truly captivating.’ So that was January 1996.”
Podcast Finale: Arnett Questions Poehler’s Listening Habits
As the interview drew to a conclusion, Arnett requested Poehler to respond to his inquiry with sincerity.
“This is a challenging question. This is serious inquiry, alright? And I am aware of your serious disposition for a comedian. Her mother often remarked that to her during disagreements,” Arnett revealed, prompting Poehler to laugh and clarify, “During arguments, she would comment, ‘You are excessively serious for a comedian.’”
Arnett proceeded to ask whether Poehler had ever listened to the “Smartless” podcast, to which she affirmed that she had. “That’s a bit high-pitched,” Bateman jokingly commented on Poehler’s elevated vocal response.
Arnett Expresses Pride in Coparenting Relationship with Poehler
While summarizing Poehler’s podcast appearance with Bateman and Hayes, Arnett reflected on his collaborative parenting dynamic with his former spouse.
“I harbor genuine pride in it. Naturally, adjustments take time as everyone adapts to the evolving circumstances. I am also deeply proud of our accomplishments, particularly as parents. This has held significant importance for both of us. I am exceptionally fortunate to have her as a partner in this regard,” Arnett expressed with admiration. “There are few individuals with whom I communicate more frequently than her, which is somewhat unconventional, but it is wonderful. I consider myself truly lucky.”
He further stated, “She remains someone with whom I frequently discuss numerous matters. … She is the individual I consult, stating, ‘I am considering undertaking this.’ Whether concerning personal matters or professional endeavors, I actively seek her counsel because it holds value for me, as I trust her judgment. She is exceptional.”
