Travel Disruption: Lanzarote Flights Cancelled Amidst Torrential Rainfall and Flooding

Lanzarote holidays have been disrupted as severe weather conditions forced travel operator TUI to cancel flights to the popular Canary Island. Torrential rain and widespread flooding prompted a state of emergency declaration in the Spanish destination on Saturday, impacting numerous holidaymakers eager for an Easter break.

Island Resorts Grapple with Flood Aftermath

Costa Teguise, a favored resort among tourists, endured significant flooding. Visitors documented the impact on social media, sharing images and videos depicting submerged pool areas filled with muddy water and roads coated in thick layers of mud. Adding to the travel chaos, some passengers only learned of their flight cancellations upon arrival at the departure airport.

TUI Responds to Holiday Disruptions

A spokesperson for TUI addressed the situation stating, β€œDue to the limited availability of alternative lodging options on the island during this peak Easter travel period, we regrettably had to cancel a small number of scheduled departures yesterday and today.”

The travel firm outlined options for affected customers: β€œClients are entitled to a complete reimbursement or the opportunity to reschedule for a different TUI holiday, accompanied by a re-booking incentive.”

TUI further emphasized their commitment to customer safety, “The well-being of our customers and staff remains our utmost concern. TUI resort teams are actively collaborating with local authorities to assist customers currently in affected hotels, secure alternative accommodations, or arrange return flights to the UK.”

Travel Advisory and Weather Update

The Foreign Office issued a travel advisory on Monday, cautioning that journeys to Lanzarote would face disturbances following the intense rainfall and flooding.

Travelers to or currently on the island are urged to heed the guidance of local authorities and stay informed about local weather updates.

Improved Weather Conditions Expected

Fortunately, the weather forecast for Lanzarote indicates a significant improvement in the coming days.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency anticipates minimal rain chances, predicting predominantly cloudy to sunny weather with temperatures reaching up to 23 degrees Celsius.

No Injuries Reported, State of Emergency Lifted

Local officials have confirmed that no injuries have been reported as a result of the adverse weather. The Canary Islands government rescinded the state of emergency declaration on Sunday morning.

Arrecife and San Bartolome were also among the municipalities most severely affected by the heavy rainfall.

The head of Lanzarote’s emergency services reported that crews responded to 300 calls predominantly in Arrecife and Teguise overnight on Sunday. Some residences experienced flood damage.

Recent images illustrated the severity of the deluge, with submerged automobiles, inundated buildings, and overflowing bins swept along roadways by powerful floodwaters, occurring just days after Storm Oliver impacted the island.

Lanzarote remains a sought-after destination for tourists, particularly from Britain, attracted by its year-round mild climate, beaches, water sports, and various attractions.

Jet2 Holidays Inquiry

Jet2, another travel provider, also offers holidays to some of the areas most impacted by the flooding. The Daily Express has reached out to Jet2 for their response to the situation.
