Slovak PM Fico Angrily Rejects EU Criticism Over Moscow Visit Plan

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – Populist Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico strongly reacted Tuesday to remarks he deemed “disrespectful” from the European Union’s top diplomat. The EU foreign policy chief cautioned European leaders against traveling to Moscow for ceremonies commemorating the end of World War II, specifically the Victory Day military parade.

Fico Defends Moscow Parade Attendance

Fico, known for his pro-Russian leanings, has repeatedly stated his intention to attend the military parade in the Russian capital on May 9. The event marks the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

EU Warns Against Moscow Celebrations Amid Ukraine War

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, speaking to reporters in Luxembourg after a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday, conveyed the concerns of several member states. She stated that “any participation in the May 9th parades, or celebrations, in Moscow will not be taken lightly on the European side.” Kallas emphasized the gravity of Russia’s ongoing “full-scale war in Europe” as the reason for this stance.

Kallas further elaborated, stating, “We made it very clear that we do not want any candidate country to participate in these events on the 9th of May in Moscow.” She urged member states to instead dispatch representatives to Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, to demonstrate solidarity.

“Nobody Dictates My Travel,” Fico Declares

“I will go to Moscow on May 9,” Fico asserted in a public statement, directly addressing Kallas.

“Mrs. Kallas, I wish to inform you that I am the democratically elected Prime Minister of Slovakia, a sovereign nation,” he stated. “No one can dictate my travel itinerary.”

Honoring Soviet Soldiers

Fico clarified that his visit to Moscow is intended to pay tribute to the Red Army soldiers who liberated Slovakia and to commemorate all victims of Nazi oppression during World War II.

Kremlin’s Victory Day Messaging

The Kremlin has historically utilized the annual “Victory Day” commemorations to promote its military strength. During last year’s event, Russian President Vladimir Putin lauded Russian forces engaged in the conflict in Ukraine as “heroes.”

Divergent Views on Russia and Ukraine

Fico’s perspective on Russia’s war in Ukraine contrasts sharply with the majority of European leaders. He returned to power last year after his Smer (Direction) party secured victory in parliamentary elections on a platform advocating pro-Russia and anti-American policies. Since assuming office, his government has halted Slovakia’s military assistance to Ukraine, criticized EU sanctions against Russia, and pledged to obstruct Ukraine’s NATO membership aspirations.

Kyiv Visit Omitted

In contrast to numerous Western politicians, Fico has not yet visited Kyiv since the commencement of Russia’s full-scale invasion over three years ago.

Domestic Opposition to Pro-Russia Stance

Fico’s administration has faced significant public demonstrations opposing its pro-Russian stance and other government policies.
