Katy Perry’s Handwritten Note Offers Glimpse into Mindset Ahead of Spaceflight
Pop superstar Katy Perry is providing fans with an intimate look into her thoughts just before her inaugural journey to space this Monday. The acclaimed singer is scheduled to launch from Texas alongside Lauren Sanchez, fiancée of Jeff Bezos, television personality Gayle King, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, former rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn for a groundbreaking 11-minute suborbital flight aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.
Perry’s Affirmations Spark Speculation of Spaceflight Anxiety
Over the weekend, Perry composed a list of affirmations, notably beginning with: ‘I am safe.’ This initial statement has led observers to speculate about potential apprehension regarding her impending space excursion. The succinct declaration is perceived as Perry addressing the inherent trepidation associated with space travel and reassuring herself of her well-being throughout and following the mission.
In a morning interview, Perry also became emotional when questioned about a message for her family.
‘My message is that I love them, and I am overflowing with love,’ she expressed, visibly moved. ‘I am deeply honored to represent courageous women within my family.’
Historic All-Female Crew Embarks on Blue Origin Space Mission
The six-member crew is poised for liftoff at 8:30 am Central Time from Texas. Their vessel is Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, designated NS-31, marking what Blue Origin claims is the first all-female crewed mission to space. However, this assertion has faced some contention, overlooking historical precedents like Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo orbital flight in 1963.

11-Minute Suborbital Journey Awaits
Once the capsule reaches a state of freefall, the crew will experience approximately three to four minutes of weightlessness. During this period, they will be able to unbuckle from their seats and observe the expansive vista of space. However, this phase of zero gravity will be brief as the capsule commences its descent shortly after entering space, deploying parachutes for a secure landing back on Earth.
Brief Weightlessness and Journey Beyond the Karman Line
The New Shepard capsule is projected to reach a peak altitude ranging from 62 to 66 miles. This trajectory will carry it just beyond the Karman line, widely recognized as the boundary demarcating the start of space. Based on Blue Origin’s past performance data, NS-31 is expected to cross the Karman line roughly three and a half minutes post-launch, officially entering space.
“All-Female” Crew Claim and the Boundary of Space
Blue Origin’s declaration of this being the inaugural all-female space crew has been met with scrutiny. Critics point out the historical omission of Valentina Tereshkova’s pioneering solo mission in 1963. Furthermore, the universally accepted status of the Karman line as the definitive edge of space is also debated within scientific and aerospace communities.
Perry’s Preparation and Excitement for Space Dream
In the lead-up to the mission, Perry has openly shared her reflections. Earlier in the week, she conveyed, ‘I am in constant dialogue with myself, affirming, “You are brave, you are bold, you are undertaking this for the inspiration of future generations, particularly young girls, to envision themselves in space with limitless possibilities.”‘
The celebrated ‘Roar’ vocalist also mentioned engaging in ‘psychological’ preparation for the spaceflight, including studying works by the renowned Carl Sagan and other scientific figures.
While Perry’s public pronouncements hint at underlying anxieties about the space venture, she emphasized that realizing this ambition is a 15-year-long aspiration. She also provided an exclusive glimpse inside the training capsule, expressing enthusiasm for the approaching launch.
In a video shared with fans, Perry, clad in her blue spacesuit, presented a tour of the ‘capsule’ used for pre-flight training. ‘I’m going to show you the capsule we’ve been training in for the past few days. Here I am! Seat number 2!’ she exclaimed.
Perry further added, ‘I’m contemplating singing in space – a must-do! These seats are reserved for my astronaut girl friends. We are the “taking up space crew,” a phrase with a clever double meaning. I won’t say I’m in disbelief because I thoroughly believe in pursuing dreams to fruition!’
